VPN Recommendations

I'm sure that there was a thread or two on here about user experiences with VPN's, but despite a search nothing was found. Any reviews online seem to be mostly from the suppliers themselves, so might any of the ppruners recommend a reliable and cost friendly VPN service that works well when travelling please ? I just want to protect myself when using a myriad of Wi-Fi networks when underway, rather than stopping the NSA, GCHQ etc reading my boring life over my shoulder ;-)

The Opera internet browser (on which I happen to be sending this post) has its own built-in VPN capability.

I wonder how well this free VPN measures up against a paid for service like those mentioned above. I don't know the answer only because I don't right now have a need for a VPN!

Depends where you are going to travel? If you spend a lot of time in China I would go for Express VPN. Most expensive but also worth it if you spend time in lots of blocked countries. If not then NordVPN as many have already suggested. It's good and well priced. Especially if you sign up for 3 years.

I used Express VPN last year to view the major cycling events in the northern hemisphere, and also for our own excursion into EU in August / September. It was trouble free, fast and expensive. Being a miserable old coot, I could try something else this year, but I already have the account (dormant at present) and the software installed for E-VPN in the relevant computer(s) so I'll probably stay with them. It's only money after all. Besides the virus might fell me by then anyway, so what does it matter (Heck I'm coming out on the grim side this morning; perhaps I need another coffee, or should I go straight to the whiskey cupboard ...).

One final point can be made about my Express VPN purchase. I had stumbled into the assumption that the prices quoted were in AU dollars. There was nothing observed at the time to indicate otherwise. When I subsequently checked the paypal balance, I discovered that the prices and transaction were all in $US, making it even more expensive than I thought. I protested; no change, but the site now makes it quite clear about which currency they are working with. I'm now very astute about all such transactions where the base currency units are somewhat ambiguous.

I have both PIA and NordVPN.

Of the two I frequently use PIA. Ease of use mainly and seems to be faster.

Both are multi platform and again PIA is favourite due to user interface and functionality.

It's looking like NordVPN for my needs, mainly because it's the most vanilla and far-reaching regarding servers/reliability.

Although Opera VPN is available for MAC Catalina it's not available for IOS users in the UK.

I chose NordVPN, and it has worked well for my needs for the most part so far. I know that there are perhaps better and cheaper options, but the amount of servers Nord seems to have at least guarantees steady reliable service. As to it's vulnerability to hacking, that's beyond my pay grade.

I used the PIA client for years. Then they disabled it for my version of Windoze, so I tried the OpenVPN option, still with PIA.

It's MUCH faster than the PIA client ever was, so if you're a PIA customer and haven't explored this option, you might wish to take a look at it.
