Don't know about the Works database.
For the spreadsheet, File/Save as... then select the appropriate Excel format (95 or 97-2000) (.xls) in the box below the filename selection box (don't know the english name of that box). Tested it on a small spreadsheet.

Ah yes, quite so. Didn't read the question properly:o
A Works spreadsheet can be saved as .xls, a Works database (.wdb) can't. This is for Works 4.0 on win95 (don't laugh, if it ain't broke I ain't gonna fix it).
