May seem trivial, but I can't add smillies to my posts. The Disable smillies box is unchecked, but I haven't been able to use smillies on Pprune for a while now.

I didn't think it was possible to disable smilies. Do you mean the message icon at the bottom?
My usual response would be to click on the "small A, big A" icon top right in the message frame but that's gone at the moment. Interesting.

Which editor are you using? Check your User CP
There's 3 - Basic, Standard and WYSIWYG. ISTR that Basic doesn't allow smilies (or doesn't provide the menu to put them in).
I find that Standard is perfectly adequate - I can't remember what the problem was with the WYSIWYG one, but I gave up on it many years ago.
And of course, clear your browser cache, the universal panacea.
