Lightbulb Worldwide Internet Service Provider

Have just discovered Maglobe a roaming internet service provider. They are much cheaper than AOL plus they do not charge a monthly suscription.

Maglobe are ideal for obtaining a dial up number for the internet when downroute. They use a prepaid credit system and offer about 1 hours connection for $1 in the US - and about $4-5 for the rest of the world. Visit the link below for more details.

I just checked that site and it doen't compare with AOL as I know it. My AOL fee in the UK is about $24 per month - that includes everything with NO telephone call charges and I can stay connected 24 hrs a day if I like. When I am abroad I have two choices - I can dial up AOL locally and pay a small extra charge (they have dial-up numbers everywhere I've been).. or I can visit an Internet cafe and access AOL free to check my email. How does Maglobe beat that, or have I misunderstood something?

I too use AOL, or did, the additional charges they levy for connection in other countries is far more than the Maglobe connection charges, plus Maglobe do not levy monthly charges.

Check the AOL roaming charges price list for comparison, I think it can be found under Go BILLING.

I have just used my Maglobe account in JFK & IAD for about 3 hours and used less than $3 worth of credit.

Maglobe can not compete for UK dialups as this is charged at the rest of the world fee of $3.96

Hope this helps.

ppk... I got my math wrong so have corrected my earlier posting. I guess Maglobe is the better deal for roaming around and AOL is still pretty good for a fixed location (UK in this case).

I've just spent some time in France with a US chum who was accessing his AOL e-mail using a toll free number. That's all I know; I've no idea what his regular monthly payments are but he's no fool and wouldn't waste his dosh.

All

I mentioned this in another thread sometime ago.

Try GRICDial . After downloading the dialer package, you can connect to a "local" ISP whereever you are in the world for the cost of a local call.

The only necessity is to have your logon name/password with your "home" ISP which you use to logon on to the GRIC network. There is a list of ISPs that take part in this program. I use it all the time I am overseas and it has never failed me.
