Where has www.shorpy.com gone

For about a week now, I have been unable to get any response when trying to connect to the shorpy site: Shorpy Historical Photo Archive | Vintage Fine Art Prints

I've tried with both Firefox of Internet Explorer.
Does anyone else have this situation?

Not Shorpy's problem, not Comcast's problem.

I finally got around to doing some investigating. First I tried a WiFi access point on a different gateway to the Internet. Shorpy worked. Then I used my neighbor's unencrypted WiFi, which is on Comcast. Shorpy worked!!

So the problem lies with my cable modem / router. Multiple PCs using this modem/router all have the problem.

Thank you all for your responses. I should have been looking closer to home. I have cycled the power on the modem/router, but that hasn't fixed the problem.

With your symptoms, it sounds like either a DNS issue (more than likely at your ISP rather than the modem/router) or a MTU issue.

Lack of progress report:

I had a nearby friend with an identical cable modem / router and also using Comcast try shorpy. He had no problem.

I suspected the DNS I use so I found the IP address of shorpy (63.247.140.19) and entered that in my browser. I still can't access shorpy. So then I looked in my cable modem / router for blocked IP addresses. There aren't any, at least where I looked (Access Restrictions).

I've tried turning the firewall off. That doesn't help.

I doubt that it's the MTU setting, since I've tried a number of computers using this cable modem/router and all had trouble. One of them has WiFi and works with the neighbor's unencrypted Access Point, but CANNOT access shorpy or its sub-sites through my cable modem / router instead of WiFi.

If the modem / router has a MTU, I haven't tried that, but why would it suddenly change last week?

I continue to be stumped.

Like my now having to sign in to PPRuNe twice to post, probably 'cos "they" have changed something ?

If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It, why can't "they" leave well alone.

I had no problems with Win '98, but now, having fought my through Win XP, Vista and Win 7 I'm now struggling with Win 8.1 Grrrr.

I guess getting rid of the man with the red flag walking in front of the motor car was an improvement, and INS got rid of the sextant, but .......... is all progress better ?

Seacue,I've had a similar experience. For some unknown reason there was 1 site only that I was buying fibre equipment from that I couldn't access when using my DSL modem.I tried everything to no avail.I did a tracert a few times and it timed out in LA for no apparent reason after 8 hops. After 2 years, with nothing changed at my end I can now access it fine.No-one else had any problems with the site, just me.

Problem Now Understood, Thanks to TWT

As suggested by TWT, I did a tracert (or traceroute on Linux).

It times out at what I determined (see below) to be the place which hosts shorpy.

I then did the same through my neighbor's WiFi, which works with shorpy. It got to Shorpy Historical Photo Archive | Vintage Fine Art Prints and the last step before shorpy was the place that it timed out on the tracert from my own PC / router / modem.

I conclude that I have been declared a personna non grata by shorpy and it won't deal with me - as represented by my cable modem.

I wonder whether "representations" to shorpy made through the route which works would have positive or negative results.

TWT, thanks for the suggestion.

Edited to add: My next step will be to try to get a new IP address for my modem. Since I have a dynamic IP address, getting a new IP lease may accomplish this.

Further edit: But it didn't get a new IP address or lease expiration.

Strange ! I found I had to access the site via my company VPN ( I work remotely) or via a USB dongle which were with different ISP's than my DSL modem.Perhaps the experts here may have some insights.

For the record, nothing has changed on PPRuNe in regards to login. If you are having trouble logging in and staying logged in, please check your browser and cookie settings. Try a different browser if the issue continues to persist.

and (ssshhh) Win XP
You are still (sort of) permitted to use that word round these parts until April 8th, 2014. (The underlying less than subtle message being that you should get up off your lazy backside and upgrade to something supported before D-Day.)

After that.... the answer to all XP questions from myself (and, I assume, that man from Bracknell and the others) will be that you're very much on your own. I very much do not want to encourage the desperate clinging community.

Alles klar?

I still think this could be a MTU issue. Either that or something your ISP can ut their finger on.

Try the former. If it doesn't work, contact the latter and explain your issue.
