To:Users of Apple iPad - Sunlight/Temperature issues
I have not purchased an iPad yet due to the problem that it is not viewable in bright sunlight. To be viewable in bright sunlight requires a Luminescence value of at least 1,000 candela per square meter (NITS) and 1350 NITS is even better. The iPad specification is only 350 NITS.
A company is introducing a solution in the form of an accessory display that connects to the iPad as well as to the iPhone to solve the problem of sun light view ability as well as to the temperature sensitivity of the iPad.
No price has been announced yet but I am guessing it will be in the area of $500...Have any of you been disappointed because of the view ability limits of the iPad?
Thanks!

To be honest most tablets and smart phones are difficult to use in direct sunlight. I guess if you have a device that you can see in the sunlight regardless of NITS then your battery life will be compromised.

rsiano,
I agree with crewmeal. You are making mountains out of molehills and trying to give Apple a hard time when its not justified.
Also, to be perfectly honest, the glare in bright sunlight is bad for your eyes anyway.

and as you suggested the challenges are there in all similar screens and in my opinion a distinct disadvantage in their use.
The design engineering community needs to address this shortfall to enhance the useability to the consumer. Of course the technology has not yet grown to that capacity within the markets cost tolerance.
I recently suggested to one manufacturer, of a similar screen device to be used in sunlight, that a simple momentary button push to increase the readability of the screen for a few seconds would greatly help in my use.
If the consumer demands more, the technology will step up to it and we should not be afraid of being accused of making mountains out of molehills.

rsiano..... just get one, you will be pleasantly surprised and knowing that you are a person who loves knowledge, you will be amazed at the amount of technical information that you can carry around with you.
Will be back in your class next month, so hope to see you with an iPad

I never have a problem
Get one. I have never had a problem! I suppose that if you are in an aircraft with a canopy, maybe....but I have plenty of alternative placements in the cockpit out of the sun.
I have a friend that bought the mini and he has it mounted on the yoke. One of our 604s has old EFBs that are useless and so I have just taken it out and used the mount for the iPad. Sunlight has until this moment, never been an issue. The other 604, I just have it on the side.
It permits me to have Jepp, so if I get a call, I can review the charts, the manuals etc all in the taxi to the airport (or in the house´s smallest room) I can check runways or en route charts, overlay weather radar and upper winds, low or high en route charts, I have the AFM, the weight and balance, the QRH and the MEL......and it is there when-ever a question arises, a phone call comes in, the engineers ring with a question, something comes up over dinner with the co-pilot.....we can look it up. Even better, we can search for words. Better than an index!
With AIRINC, I can calculate and file a flight-plan......there are just so many apps and possibilities. Add that I have books, so that I can read in iBook and carry 100 books with me, instead of an "real" book or two and the weight and bulk.
Have fun!
