A well written article about the inner works of Word processing.
I'll keep this separate because it's only for general interest. Quite amazing, and makes me think another look at OO or LO is worthwhile.
Anyone know how their inner workings compare?

In my experience with Word and Word Perfect I found that Wordperfect would convert just about any format to any format and do that in about 80 languages. In most cases any file that MS office said was corrupt could be opened in WP and once saved in its original Office format by WP could be opened and used by MS programs. It must be eight years since I used WordPerfect but with those experiences in mind, I say its a far superior program to MS Word.

The Wiki article on the Open Document Format (ODF) might be worth reading. The ODF is ISO/IEC 26300:2006 with Amendment 1 in 2012. ODF is also called just OpenDocument.
Early in the Wiki:
The specifications were originally developed by Sun Microsystems as an XML format for OpenOffice.org office suite.
Well down in the Wiki, I found:
The free office suites Apache OpenOffice, Calligra, KOffice, NeoOffice and LibreOffice all use OpenDocument as their default file format.
ODF has been at least partially supported by MS Office 2007 (service pack 2) and newer..

Interesting comments. Thanks.
I'm plodding on simply because of time constraints - delayed my flight home etc., etc.
I'm accepting RTF conversion because I've never found why my PC will not read the same .doc that the laptop does. Same Office download.
As far as I know, it's going okay. But Word's reticence to show its inner workings leaves me blind to any detritus that RTF might allow past.
Last night, I had several instances of lines of text being pushed over to the right. Backspace Deleting blind seemed to kill whatever it was causing the problem. "P" did not reveal anything but the normal code.
The comment in one of those write-ups about WP users all wanting to know how to reveal codes was very illuminating.
