Thumbs up Google search from your address bar

Courtesy of the Kim Komando show. Pretty cool tip.

PERFORM CUSTOM SEARCHES WITH YOUR BROWSER

Did you know that you don't have to go to a search site when
you are looking for something on the Internet? You can find
exactly what you are looking for directly from your browser.
And you can even select the search site that your browser uses.

When you type keywords into the address box in Internet
Explorer or Netscape, the browsers perform a search for you.
The default search engine in IE is MSN Search; Netscape uses
its own search engine.

You can change the search engine, if you want. Let's say you
want to use Google. Here's how to change it:

In Internet Explorer:
--Click the Search button. Click Customize>>Autosearch settings
--Click the down arrow under "Choose a search provider for
address bar searches." Click Google Sites
--Under "When searching," be sure to select "Just display
results in the main window". Click OK>>OK.

In Netscape 6:
--Click Edit>>Preferences. Double click Navigator
--Click Internet Search
--Click the down arrow on the box opposite "Search using"
and select Google. Click OK.

Thumbs up

Yeah, I have the google.com toolbar on my PC.

Works great - you just type in your query, and then your browser page changes to the google search results!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Search Page"="http://www.google.com"
"Search Bar"="http://www.google.com/ie"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL]
""="http://www.google.com/keyword/%s"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
"SearchAssistant"="http://www.google.com/ie"

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Save the above as a .reg file and doubleclick on it in Explorer.
Remember to include the REGEDIT4

I found this easier than installing the Google Toolbar and less crowding. See http://www.google.com/options/defaults.html#default for a few more tips.

Another dodge is to add the Google URL to the CWindows\Favourites\Links folder. Prefix this with full pathname of your IE file to get it to open in a new window.

I too have been using the google toolbar for a while, and a very useful tool it is. But recently due to problems with IE6 I installed Netscape as well, and incredibly enough it appears I can't download the toolbar for use with Netscape.

Has M$ got shares in Google?

Even better - www.opera.com which already has that built-in, and you can select just about any search engine you like.

Warren Rabbit, unfortunately Google has not (yet) taken the step to provide similar add-in for Netscape.

But you can easily add a shortcut to the Navigator Toolbar.

1. Go to your favorite Google site
2. add the page to your Bookmarks
3. click on Bookmarks and Edit Bookmarks
4. in the new window highlight the Google bookmark
5. click on FILE and ADD SELECTION TO TOOLBAR

it is still not the same..but it may help
