Internet Explorer error

I used IE 5 happily for a long time, but had to upgrade to IE6 because of a problem with internet banking and java. Since then I am being assaulted with messages as follows;

"Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. If you were in the middle of something, tough titties. You can send us an error message if you like but since we don't even know who you are why would you bother?"

Seems to happen most often with jpgs I saved from the internet. I used to have jpegs associated with Microsoft Photo Editor, but now I can't find it and I am stuck with IE being the default association.

Apart from recommending Netscape (is it a seamless changeover, btw? Can't imagine M$ would let it be), is there anything anybody can recommend?

Binoculars, to avoid the nonsurfing problems you could install a nonbrowser image viewer. A good one is IrfanView (current release 3.61). The download URLS seem to be incredibly long so start at http://www.tucows.com or http://www.download.com and do a search or browse through the Graphics Viewer section. When you install IrfanView it will give you a wide range of file associations to choose from. (Selecting *.gif and *.jpg,*.jpeg are obvious starters. I use graphics editors for wmf and bmp files so I left those associations alone.)

IrfanView has an ugly icon but you can change that easily enough (and I like to have a different icon for gifs and jpegs anyway).

Installation of Netscape has never been a problem for me but I have never had MSIE installed.
