Use of WiFi
ASUS EeePC Model X101CH (10")
Purchased for this trip out of NZ to the USA. Trouble connecting to WiFi transmitting on the 802.11n protocol, seems OK if I use a 802.11g gadget.
Block of apartments, one owner allows friends to use their 'unsecured' WiFi Modem ( I know, I know, but useful to download e-mail than get offline.
Any reason that 802.11n is proving difficult ? The connection is made, but without the Internet access. Moving directly to the Modem and getting a very strong signal makes no difference ( no, I cant connect by Ethernet cable - long story )

'unsecured', so AES/TKIP not in play.
I'd suggest checking the SSID as it might be one already 'known' to your laptop (e.g. 'Netgear') and hence your laptop is passing credentials at the handshaking phase and failing as none are required. If so, just delete the stored wifi of that SSID.
Failing that, you're probably screwed as it might be either:
1) the AP needs resetting to allow your laptop to connect
2) your wifi drivers may need updating
3) the channel the AP is broadcasting on isn't available to your card (despite the SSID beaconing being picked up)

Thanks guys, the situation has however resolved itself. I took advantage of a Free Tune-Up offered by a local computer retailer, this was really nothing more than a Virus and Registry scan, and being almost new nothing showed up of course, but afterwards the subject WiFi connection worked.
No answer to that (that I can think of ) maybe some garbage loaded on to the computer as part of the original sales package was removed.
