Why am I pinging?
When I select 'Reply' to a topic, I see:-
Why? and how can I clear this?
Oh - and what does 'permalink' mean?

I think you need to give a bit more information about whats going on. However its curious that either thats a blank web page, or else my security software is blocking whatever is on it
Without knowing more I think you should put this down to a hijack attack.
Just when do you get this error? When replying to what?

May be this is the reason, and they want to get the rating up?

G-CPTN may be referring to this -

I get it now and then on some threads but I don't think it causes any harm. All
my Adblock, Peerblock, AV and Antimalware programs don't even bat an eyelid.

Replying to the Where on Earth? thread in JetBlast.
Doesn't appear on this reply.
Still there in Where on Earth?

I get it also on that thread - the same message, the same link.
There has to be something specific to that thread - like an embedded link to the pinged site, or a webbug or similar that is tracking visits to the thread

Is it causing you any trouble CPTN? As I mentioned earlier it
appears harmless as none of my alerting software makes any
mention of it. But a regular and thorough deletion of cookies
and browsing history could shore up any lingering doubts.
Looks like it could be advertisement related - turn on Adbock
if you're using Firefox. It can then ping for all it wants till the
cows come home.

Apparently anyone can add one or more trackbacks when they make a post in a thread.
That trackback is then listed as "Already Pinged" for ever after - presumably to avoid duplication of effort - and is visible to everyone else that replies to the topic.
The trackback remains even if the associated post is deleted.
So a spammer pops in, creates a trackback and you all get to see it. There's nothing that can be done, but then nothing to worry about either - your system is neither responsible nor affected.
And yes, I have alerted the admins and suggested to them that trackbacks be disabled.
