Phone Cameras

Having got a Motorola Cliq XT, for which I had to wait, I expected a camera of some worth - after all, it was a 5mb.

As a dinosaur, I'm having trouble getting to grips with this thing. I really have reached a phase of wanting to jump up and down on it. Then, having done that, put it in the path of a steam roller. Then take it back.

Now I find the camera is just plain cr@p. I was given a 1.3mp years ago that was better than this. It came free after opening an account with someone.

I'm getting numerous 40 - 70k pics, then suddenly a 1.1 mb pic. that came out, out of focus. (supposed to be auto focus. And my hand is still reasonably steady. )

Any thought to what I should expect from what would have been an expensive phone if I'd had to pay for it?

You can select 5 MP, 3 MP or 1 MP via the menu. Perhaps you're changing the settings. Autofocus is slow: half-press, wait a while for it to focus, finish the press.

As with most camera phones, it has a lens the size of a zit and a sensor the size of a zit's zit. The quality is what you'd expect in context.

There are a few sample photos here: T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ XT review – Android and Me

Looks a good camera to me (for a phone)

...and don't get drawn into the more Megapixels the better the pic. A lot depends on the lens and the processor....

No, indeed, I still use a Nikon D50, which until recently I'd thought was pretty medium. On purchasing a 24" 1920 x 1080 monitor, I was stunned at what it could do.

Thanks to the stalwarts for the info, it was technically a better review than the one I read. It does look like there's hope of getting it under control and in a sub link I found a promise of an upgrade to 2.1 firmware for all US phones. They didn't know if it would require a wipe.

The inability to shed apps seems a bit high-handed to say the least. I wonder if re-wiping would clean out the unwanted items. It will remain to be seen how long that process takes.

I found the radio quite good. I'd concluded that the wires were the antenna last night, while bending over to inspect an ant hill, the sound broke up somewhat. Very nice scan and stored frequency list.

(It's easy to see how they can get so much in a phone, when an ant can work out that taking his lump of earth to the top of a ridge and heaving it over the edge, was better than letting it rolling back down their hole. So much logic in that little noggin. I can't think why I didn't take a photo of it. )

It was reassuring to find that I could charge it from a USB port, though the lead is different to my camera lead, so forgetting that on one's travels could mean a no-go phone.

I'll make an update when I've found time (for time, read a calm moment) for more fiddling.

Why is it that so many people when wanting a good camera, go and buy a phone?
Maybe there's a reason that Canon, Nikon etc don't make phones.

Bloke buying my car last week, takes out his i-phone and snaps the VIN number. Teases at the picture to blow it up, and there it is. Tilts his phone horizontal, and there it is bigger. And all in his records ready to be sent for checking.

And that's just one reason. Oh, and my Nikon with the 18-200 lens on it, takes 500 calories a day to carry.

I should care...he purchased the car. Not only that, he didn't barter. Not only that, he paid $100 too much. Not only that, the Rivetess pushed a $100 bill back over the table at him.

I did think that throwing myself bodily over the table might be a tad undignified, so he got to keep it.

Camera. I've just got back from the park with some pics. 88f here today and bright. I notice that every time the camera is turned on, the screen flares. That doesn't seem very sensible. I assume that there's no iris, so the matrix will be hit with bright light whatever I do.

Trying to see the screen with the sun not far off the overhead is an exercise in futility.

Oh, for heaven's sake!!! I was looking in a folder clearly marked 'Thumbnails'

Didn't know it did that, but quite handy as separate stash of 4 or 5k jpg files.

Searched around a bit and there were some quite decent photos. Doh!!

Well I guess if you can't carry a pen and some paper.
Call me old fashioned if you like.

Okay, Mr old fashioned if you like,

it's quite a string of numbers, and transcribing them on a car-park or somesuch has to be checked and double checked. It's an example of how to get it right first time. Good, providing you don't erase it.

Mind you, the older dark numbers don't photograph very well.

Mine has an LED flash, where some are Zenon? It seems reasonably good, but the battery does seem to be needing a charge every day.
