Sony Vaio vertical coloured lines on screen (photo)
Hello everyone,
I'm hoping that one of you can point me in the right direction. Slowly over the period of a year these coloured lines have appeared on my laptop's screen. They stay there from start up and never get any better.
When removing the screens data supply from the graphics card the screen went blank white with no lines showing so I'm assuming that the problem lies in the graphics card - it's just I'm not too sure what could possibly be done at that end.

I would guess you have a mechanical problem within the notebook, presumably one of the connectors at either end of the cable between the base unit and the screen. You might want to Google your model number, to see if others have had the same problem and know of a fix.

As against what TDX wrote, I think that's answered by your first post: that the screen went 'all white' when the video signal was removed. Bushy's 'connector' diagnosis is much more likely. Since it sounds as tho' you are acquainted with removing the ribbon connector, it's worth trawling for a replacement one. Don't know about the Vaio, but I've replaced a couple (obtained via Ebay) in the last year which solved signal problems... tho this was complete (or intermittent) loss of signal altogether.

So I've removed the ribbon connector from the back of the screen. This is what I get:
A beautiful stripe free white screen.
When I plug the connector back in it goes like this:
Right, I'm going to attack the mother board

I have a similar problem with a Dell that is about 4 years old. I took it to a local computer shop who told me that they are pretty certain that it is a problem with the mother board. It can be fixed for less than the cost of replacing your computer, but is not a cheap fix by any means. As it doesn't affect the performance of my computer I have decided to live with it for now.

This happened to my old Compaq Armada, and in my case it was the ribbon cable. No idea of cost as it was fixed by my work IS department cannibalizing another machine of the same model that had been pensioned off.
For the record it also happened to the fold out screen on my three year old Sony HDD camcorder a few months ago, and my parents' two year old camcorder from the same Sony product range too a few weeks later. In both these cases the cause was also ribbon cable failure. FWIW fitted replacement cost from a repair shop I found via Google search was about seventy quid.

Notwithstanding that I too would start with the ribbon cable as indicated in my previous post in this thread, I thought I would share the following by way of comparison:
Per another thread, our three year old daughter dropped her Mother's ASUS 1000H Netbook on to the floor a few days ago and (temporarily as it amazingly turned out) damaged the screen display. Although I informed the repair shop that I no longer needed the quote that I had requested for supply and fitting of a replacement, I have just received the quote anyway: £115 for the screen (quite small at 10.1 inches diagonal display area) plus £15 carriage. £130 all in.
