I've had a trawl through the FAQ but can find no mention of "compact your mail". What exactly does it do? Sometimes I say OK and let it get on with whatever it does, other times I cancel the offer. I am also a fairly thorough weeder of my in/out/boxes, so what benefits does it purport to give me? Can I disable it so that it doesn't keep cropping up like a presbyterian conscience to nag me?

When you delete an item in Windows Mail, it's marked as deleted but the data is still there. When you compact on exit, that space is recovered. The default is to compact once in every 100 exits, so if it's nagging you then the default has been changed.
