W7's rather unpleasant teeth.

I thought it must be me. W7 seemed so perfect, for me to accuse it of wreaking havoc on other physical drives, was a bit like a plumber telling a neuro-surgeon that he was prodding at the wrong synapse. But today my fears were, not proved, but at least substantiated.

A young pal, who earns his bread with the hi-end kit in his home, has just had the same highly destructive occurrence. He has built his own systems for years and has been keen on testing beta Windows for nearly as much time. W7 got him in just the way it got me.

At some time after the installation, W7 looked at his other drives and decided to...well, do something. He lost about half the data on the old drive.

Going back a bit, I'm sure that W7 tidied away that explorer.exe that I've mentioned before, and now, many weeks later, I think that it's taken away the photo-scanner installation that worked so well. The folder is there, but it's just plain empty.

On OS with a malevolent spirit in it, or just plain finger trouble? The case for the prosecution is becoming stronger.

I have multiple drives and partitions, I have Linux (almost never used) XP not used for about 6 months and windows 7.
I have flapped in and out of all the drives moving data about, using W7's explorer with no problems at all.

Have you posed the question on the windows 7 forums to see if anyone over there has the same problem?

I've been testing Windows 7 recently also, it's got a habbit of crashing on me every hour and the internet is constantly stopping.

Going to go back to VISTA until the full version comes out.

No, this is about the only forum I have time for. Rushing in to post is done between building jobs and battles in the back yard to get water. 104f most days. It's rained ONCE since I came back here last Autumn. At least the garden looked like Versailles tonight. Nights have to be devoted to book. The point being, where do all you computer wizzes find time to RT(plethora of)FMs?

I don't know what triggers that "Other drive syndrome." the lad that I mentioned is using kit that he edits broadcast quality films on. You may have seen some of them on the box. I figured if he can get caught, anyone can. But, was it really W7 ? We'd need at least half a dozen cases to start to be really meaningful.

I'll just check with him how he changes drives. Using the BIOS might be a bit dodgy across the differing OSs.

I'll also mention it to another pal's son who is with MS in the UK.

Like GG, I've been using Win 7 since the Beta came out. i was so impressed with it that I fitted a second hard drive in my laptop so I could boot either. I've not used XP Pro since.

Win7 is very clever at updating drivers and the like, and finding drivers for all sorts of hardware. I've been seriously impressed! But it's not deleted or even messed with anything on either machine. I've not heard of it doing so.

The only problem I've had (and it was serious at the time) was when I deleted the Windows homegroup that I never use. That resulted in it locking up the hard drives on BOTH my desktop and the laptop. I could start the machine, but I was told I didn't have the right to access anything on either machine.

It turned out MS knew about the problem, but didn't have a "fix". The only cure is to install Win7 again (on a spare partition if you have one), then boot to the new installation, and use the admin privileges to change the "owner" of the locked-out hard drives back to "Administrator" from the long string of numbers the Homegroup delete changes them to.

After that, you have two bootable and useable installations of Win 7. EasyBCD will allow setting the "main" one to default start, and all is well again.

But in none of that did any software or other stuff go walkabout.

I'm running Window 7 perfectly happily except for one very annoying problem. I've not had the dissappearing data or anything else. The only thing is the refusal to link up to the outside world through either my wireless network at home or my Vodafone dongle at other time after waking from sleep mode. It does all the connecting bit but will not authorise the connection. As soon as you reboot it works just fine. Haven't got to the bottom of this yet either.
