Media Player

Dear All,

After a quick bit of advice. I am currently recording on a SD memory card which then replays the media in traditional Windows medial player. However, of late the format has been in MPEG. I try to open and a box comes up which suggests that the file isn't reconized or I need a codec?.
Could anyone shed any light onto how I play these MPEG files. Another thing which might effect is that when I have transfered the files to my hard drive i reformat the card, using the default FAT32.

Kind Regards,

DC

It should work fine, i would maybe try downloading these codecs:

Free-Codecs.com : Download FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder 2009-01-12, FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder 2009-01-12 MMX and FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder 2008-12-19 SSE : FFDSHOW is a DirectShow decoding filter

No need for alternative players, media player will play most formats with a few notable exceptions. I would avoid ffd show in favour of ffd show-tryouts. It's better supported & far more up to date. Just google it & download. Hit yes to all the options on the install & you'll be set.

"MPEG" doesn't tell the whole story: like WAV, it's a "wrapper" format that can include data formatted with various codecs. For example, I believe the format Apple's iTunes store sells is MPEG-2 with AAC encoding. The exact codec you need might be mentioned in the manual, or there are tools that can identify what codec a file uses e.g. AVIcodec.

I'm really quite annoyed by RealPlayer's pop-ups, they can be very intrusive. I loaded this program some time ago because something said it needed it to run

Any comments on this player?

Yes. Delete it and google for quick time alternative, if you really have a thing for .rm videos. If you realy want to know the ins and outs of a video file, this is very handy: GSpot Codec Information Appliance

Yes: kill. Strip it out, install Real Alternative. For QuickTime, there's... guess.

Absolutely, get rid of Real Player.

Thoroughly bad news that I removed from my new Dell (along with Norton) as soon as it arrived.
