"MPEG" doesn't tell the whole story: like WAV, it's a "wrapper" format that can include data formatted with various codecs. For example, I believe the format Apple's iTunes store sells is MPEG-2 with AAC encoding. The exact codec you need might be mentioned in the manual, or there are tools that can identify what codec a file uses e.g.
AVIcodec.
