Windows Protection Error

Need some help,

Recently when I have been shutting down my system I am faced with a blue screen informing me of a "Windows Protection Error", and asking me to restart my computer.
When i repeat the process, I am faced with the same scenario.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I get that every time I shut down too, are you using Windows ME?

Either that or it gets halfway through the shut down procedure and then stops( or depending on how i feel at the time!)!

I find that closing down all my applications including the background ones such as firewalls and antivirus etc, before I start the Shut Down process seems to stop it happening(well at least less regularly !!).

Try it an see if it helps.

You might try uninstalling one or two of the most recent "old favourites" that you loaded up. Often they put their own *.dll files in place of the system files and they don't get on with the Operating System. Also, Windows ME is pretty well a genuine 32 bit OS and doesn't take kindly to some 16 bit (eg Windows 95) Applications.

Interestingly, ME boasts 100 or so *.vxd files - virtual device drivers - whereas Windows 2000 has only three. It's wrong to think of the Operating Systems as being like one another. You can't take liberties.
