Unhappy USB keyboard prob

Help, built a machine for my nephew about four years ago, for resons to complicated to explain the normal keyboard and mouse socket were porked, so installed usb keyboard and serial mouse and its worked fine ever since.. .Now he had probs with machine lately and as a good. .engineering solution out he goes and buys new computer.. .Draper inherits machine back, and is sorting it out for sister, so far so good.. .Windows is screwed, so decide to format and reload windows, machine will only boot in safe mode at the mo.. .Machine boots can get into bios fine by hitting Del, usb keybord work s fine can step through and alter bios settings as norm.. .Once I come out of bios and machine starts booting proper the keyboard ceases to function, can boot from win startup disk but cannot reload windows because I cannot type setup?.. .Remember normal keyboard socket is bust, anybody got any ideas.. .I can load windows on to the hard disk on . .another machine, indeed I have formated the disk on my other machine, but how the hell can I load windows without a keyboad.. .will be greatful for any advice.. . <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Question

For some reason it will not boot from widows cd rom.. .I do not recal that the usb keyboard required any separate drivers. .Have already partialy loaded windows on my machine, done that a few times load windows up to detect hardware point switch machine off tranfer to other machine and it tootles away happily detecting hardware in machine its going to live in.. .As I said the usb keyboard works if i hit del it takes me to bios screen can alter settings with usb keyboard, but as soon as I come out of bios and and it starts to load windows keyboard is kaput, . .the machine goes into safemode and I cant do squat with out keyboard working, mouse works ok.. .Going to have another go tomorrow.

What version of Windows Tony? If it is Win95 or Win98A it does not have built in USB support, even if the motherboard does (which is why BIOS works). Free upgrade for Win98 on Microsoft site. For Win95 you need the manufacturers driver from their site.

Either way you need to connect a PS2 keyboard/mouse first or use a USB to PS2 adaptor.

If it is Win98SE there are several problems it could be:

Nothing else I can do

Yahoo!!, done it, stuck usb keyboard into my machine, stuck other hard disk in and loaded windows, stuck h/d into the other machine and boff!!, everything works.. .One last prob stuck new 56k pci modem in the machine and cant get that to work, are there any generic general purpose modem drivers in win 98?.. .One of those daffy cd's came with the modem, its got drivers for every piece of kit in the universe, but windows cannot find any drivers for this modem?. got me beat it has.

Yes, Win98 has generic modem drivers.

Does Windows automatically see the modem if you use Add New Hardware" in the control panel?

If not, try adding it manually and select a generic 56K modem driver.

Also, try the modem in a couple of other PCI slots, as that often solves the problem.

Been thinking must be a fault on PCI slots, ok when unused, plonk a card in and the whole machine porked, gonna try a different motherboard in tomorrow. Have found the drivers that work this modem by a system of elimination, stuck it in my machine and went thru all the ,modem drivers on the disk, what a bastard, found one that works it ok.. .Hopefully got its back broke now, fingers crossed for tomorow.
