Arrow Networking (Windows ME) doesn't offer access

An unhappy Bear - eyes brimming with tears - (ahhhhhhhh!!) is having wierd encounters with networking.

System is up and running nicely - BUT (there's always a 'but') two of the machines on the network will only show the folder "My Documents" and the printer driver for it's own printer. They will not give me access to hard drives, CDRom drives, DVD drives etc - although they used to do, without a problem.

All three machines are using Windows Millennium and no settings have been touched (deliberately).

Any suggestions on how to get full access to every single byte of information on all these machines?

Go on, make me a happy Bear.

Cool

Have you right-clicked on My Computer and selected 'Sharing' for each machine? You need to make sure that each machine gives the others permission to view contents.

Further, double check that each machine is uniquely named on the network, and that the group setting is IDENTICAL on each machine.

Couple of pointers to start.

Be safe.

I had similar grief until I noticed that, in the NIC properties under "Advanced" there are only two settings for the "Tranceiver Type" - RJ45 or Coax. There is no Autodetect setting as in NT4 and Win 98. It defaults to RJ45 and, if you're using Ethernet Coax like me, you have to make the selecton manually. Did the trick for me.

Thanks guys...God I love this pprune stuff...so useful..

Fobo - you lost me but I'm on RJ45's anyway. Thanks for the attempt.

DreamCatcher...I think you've nailed it. I remember doing that at the start and all worked perfectly...since then I've had the hard drive on one of the desktop machines completely wiped, reformatted and re-loaded - and the laptop that comes on line occassionally is a brand new toy that hasn't been purrrrsuaded into talking properly yet.

Bet that's it...I'll let you know.

Sorry!

If you right click on "My Network Places" then "Properties" you can highlight your Network Interface Card(NIC) and left click on Properties (again). Left click on the "Advanced" tab and highlight the "TranceiverType option. That's where you can choose between RJ45 and Coax.

With any luck you'll have it sorted by now anyway with the sharing options.

Red face

Shock horror.....had a look at a right clicked "my computer"...couldn't find a sharing option.

I'll have a closer look later...it must be in there somewhere.

You need to left click (double) "My Computer" and then right click any hard drive you want to configure. You'll find the sharing option in our old friend Properties in the menu which appears when you right click.

My sympathies! It can be so infuriatingly frustrating, can't it?

Thanks guys...works a treat.

Can even share the a drives...don't want to - but at least I have the option.

Again, thanks...those buggers at Microsoft can't hide everything, can they!!

Cool

Bear Cub, fobotsco

Apologies - I missed out 'then select Explore... then select the drive and choose sharing...

Glad it worked - the answer is usually simple after it's been found!

Cheers
