Post Help!!

Hello Windows Gurus.

Having had 15 years of trouble free Mac computing, I took the plunge a few months ago and bought a Sony Vaio. (how do you pronounce that?)

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, explorer froze when I was PPRuNeing. I did control-alt delete and it started, went through part of a disc scan and the disk scan program froze.

Well after a considerable amount of faffing about, I got Windows to run but not explorer.

In desperation, I bought McAfee First Aid, Virus Scan, Firewall, Firefighter, Ambulanceman, Brain Surgeon and Quantum Physicist. To no avail!

Couldn't connect to the net!

So I rebooted from the rescue CD which wipes the C drive. No great loss. (Mac rescue CD only replaces the system not all the software and files. But hey, I'm not bitter)

Anyway all was now kind of fine except explorer only allows about 15 minutes of browsing before playing funny tricks like not loading graphics and displaying interesting but illegible graphics which appear to be a kind of echo effect of all the characters displayed on a page.

Sooo I downloaded Explorer 6 last night and it does the same.

Closing down explorer and trying to restart it, or open any window or application results in an insufficient memory message or no response at all.

So, I better post this message before I have to turn the power off and reboot.

HELP before I trash the bloody thing!!

Sounds like your hardware might be stuffed. Have you tried calling Sony and asking?

What power management settings are you using? My Vaio (N505X) used to hang if it was left unused for 30 minutes - turned out to be a result of APM kicking in. Disabled it, although I can't remember if it was in Windows or BIOS, and never had problems after that.

If your Vaio came with WinME like mine did, and with the other Sony Custom Software, it is possible to do a "Restore" to an earlier configuration. I've had to do this twice in the last six months and have been well pleased with the result. You don't lose any saved work doing this. (Ah, I see that you have rebuilt Windows anyway so ignore this, but the rest of this post might still help.)

The last time I used "Restore" it was the result of trying to use a McAfee engine update that was incompatible with ME. As a result, I upgraded to McAfee VirusScan Ver 5.21 and it now runs well on ME.

Dont forget the "safe mode" option to check for driver incompatibility. Hope it's not the hardware but it does kinda sound like it! There was a similar problem aired very recently that turned out to be a Cache Memory fault.

If it's a hardware problem wouldn't McAfee first aid find it. When I run First Aid it shows two non crtical issues. My modem is apparently on COM 3 and I don't have a joystick. Both of which I can live with.

Power saving options are all swiched off.

My McAfee virus scan is v5.16 but seems to run ok on ME and the problem occurred before it was installed.

Should I have bought another Mac?

Ummm...

1st. Its pronounced 'vi-o' if that makes any sence.

2nd. If you trash it - trash it my way

Doub't if its hardware. ie it sounds like explorer only gives you grief. Try running the pc for an hour or so, without internet exp: starting different apps etc, to see if the error re-occurs. If it does, then it might be suspect HW.

If it works ok after the hour test, download Netscape browser. See if that works. If so, explorer has become unstable. Try uninstalling it TOTALLY, and run a fresh download.

Other than that they are top machines (for a PC laptop anyway )

The problems you describe are typical of shortage of memory (graphics don't display properly, messages about resource shortages, etc.)
Assuming a) youv'e got lost of RAM, and b) none of it has gone faulty and is being blacked, and c) you have got a large enough swap file, then you probably have a program with a "memory leak"
Identifying these can be a bit of a b*gger, but there are some well known culprits, like Microsoft Outlook crashing, or Micrsoft Access.
Is this any help?
