Dial-in Networking (RAS) HELP !
After several days of tearing out of hair . . . I'm trying to set up a Remote Access Server for dial-in access to a LAN. Someone else was supposed to have done it but it turned out that he couldn't!
I'm using Win2kAdvanced Server as the RAS (not set up with any domain or active directory (trying to keep things simple!) and dialling-in with my laptop running Win98 2nd Ed.
When I dial in, the server "boots me off" with a name/password error. After investigating the logfile, I find that the server is actaully receiving a "domain name" from my laptop, of a single space code
When invited by the server to try again, I find that I can highlight and delete this space code on the login window of the laptop, and it logs in fine and everything works
Can anyone advise me how to avoid the laptop inserting the domain (on the logfile it is a space code, follwed by a ""inserted after the IP address of the laptop and before my user-name) I'd really appreciate any help as I'm not a MCSE and the MCSEs out here don't even understand the question
I do not have "log on to windows domain" set on the laptop and I tried to check it and delete any space code there anyway!

What goes around . . .
. . often lands better!

ExSim,
With the greatest of respect,I have not one idea what the hell you are talking about in the above. However, thankyou to you and a few others who helped me put my clock right a month or two ago.Although I'm a little more advanced now,the clock is still a major step forward!Don't worry I'm not quite so remedial with the FMS.

Hamster,
Okay - I was really losing hair when I posted - perhaps hoping that there were some MSCEs among the PPRuNe ranks
Anyway, we sorted the main problem and convinced the customer that "having to delete the space code" was a security precaution" and now I'm free to take my vacation in time for the Brighton Bash and McD's Bash
(the "immediate customer" was a Yank who was trying to get out of his job with "The Prince" and wasn't allowed to leave until the problem was solved - so I didn't feel good about taking my vacation 'till it was looking good!)

ExSimGuy. Here is what my tame boffin said about your problem.
"His best plan is to have a hosts file in the Windows directory with name resolution for his RAS server. There are some very useful newsgroups on news.microsoft.com with expert advice being given. I currently subscribe to the Small Business Server 4.5 and 2000 ones and find most of the solutions I need. But RAS often needs a hosts file and an lmhosts file. He may also find that logging onto his Win98 with the same user name and password that he logs onto the server helps too."
Good luck
