Post Is it Big Brother?

I have many thousand MP3's on Windows Media Player, but it keeps telling me that it's updating my media files, and my internet connection displays out going data, what is it doing and is my MP3 list going to Microsoft?.

Not sure about MP3s, but if I copy a CD to .wma format with Media Player (fair use and all that ) it goes online and figures out track names, album details etc. If I'm offline when I copy the CD then it sees that new files have appeared and tries to name them next time I am online. Maybe it is just trying that?

Thanks Evo7, I understand about track info but this updates when I open and use the player, even when I haven't copied anything for weeks.

Mine does that too and I think it is due to an obscure CD it cannot recognise. It just seems to get stuck trying to identify unknown tracks - it doesn't remember that it has already tried and failed to identify them. I doubt that it is anything more sinister that that. . .. .You could always install something like Zone Alarm and tell it to refuse Media Player access to the internet. That'll stop it

Thumbs up

T&G

I just started my WMP Ver 7.01) and it did indeed try to connect to the internet. I went into tools/options/player and unchecked the various settings that allow the player to automatically carry out operations. I also checked the box that allows it to check for updates once a month (other options are daily or weekly).
Maybe this will help.

Best!
