Win ME is 98 in a different package, Win 2000 is far more stable but has higher min spec requirements.

What's your config?

If you have a choice, W2000 is a very stable platform (if one can call Windows stable at all...).. .There is one downturn, people with games and some special software especially programmed for the DOS environment may face a problem as not all run under W2000. . .But then again, there are plenty of upgrades available and the dinosaur programs have been replaced with better ones already.. .W2000 is basically from an users point of view very very similar to 98, in detail you can however do much more with it and I have a server running on W2000 on a 24/7 basis with absolutely no problems at all.

am using AMD 900Mhz , 256ram , 40 gig HD , and 32 Mb graphics. .i dont expect to have any problems with any of the req's , but i am so sick of 98 crashing . .,the " my computer " icon on the desktop either wont load at all with the details or freezes once the details come up...the list goes on

is is possible to uninstall the win98 though ...i really dont want anything more to do with this trash , i have tonnes of my own little programs on the computer and it would take a day or two to reinstall all my stuff if i have to format the HD .... .any ideas or solutions appreciated

You can upgrade to Win 2000 from 98 without having to do a format of the drive, but a format is the cleanest way.. .You mention your own progs, I assume that you have checked if they will run under win 2000.

I would recommend 2000 to anyone, just dont forget the administrator password ! as you need this to do a lot of admin functions unless you set up a user with the same privileges

Win2k is far more stable than 9x/ME, and so (in my experience) is XP, which would be a better choice if you play games. Both have the advantage that an application can crash without the operating system commiting suicide in sympathy. However, both require care - you may find that hardware and/or software no longer works following the upgrade. For example, my Agfa ePhoto camera didn't make the transition to XP despite it being about 6 months old. Caveat Emptor.

However, if you decide to upgrade (and I'd recommend it) I'd echo SLF's comment that a format+install is the way to go. I've never been very happy with upgrades, as you almost always end up with a bunch of cruft from the previous installation - it never gets totally removed.
