Hotmail delays
Has anyone else been getting return messages from their hotmail accounts saying their emails sent will be delayed, usually up to 2 or 3 days!
Does anyone know why this is happening, I've had it a few times in the last 2 weeks. Bit of a pain if you've got something urgent to send.

If I were sending something urgent one thing I wouldn't use would be Hotmail!
Hotmail is very very busy and the host you're sending to may be running bottle neck mail filters at the moment due to the worm viruses doing the rounds. What host are you sending to? I've had one of these - I replied to yet another free offer of porn with "unsubscribe" - I've had the "delayed for x days message".

WDTBD, I'm usually sending to local major Australian servers (Telstra,Optus etc) as well as plenty of other hotmail accts.
Now that you mention it the problem could be with Telstra, any other Aussies care to comment on this.
BTW: Can you actually unsubscribe from that junk porn email that appears regularly? I've never bothered to open it to check, except maybe the "extend your @$#& by 3 inches" message. Now I'm interested...

You can unsubscribe from the porn stuff - just go into your profile settings, and look for a setting that looks like 'mail only from known sources', etc. That stops it.
Oh by the way, I wouldn't use Hotmail for important emails either.

Don't try and use a hotmail address to register a PPRuNe username because it won't work.
We've banned all hotmail addresses as they caused us more problems and a heavier admin workload than all other email addresses put together.

Thanks fella's. While we're on the subject of Hotmail, does anyone know if it can be used with Outlook? And if so, which is better Outlook or Outlook express? What's the actual difference anyway?

If you have a Hotmail account, you'll add it to Outlook Express as you would any other email account.
Use the Accounts item under the Tools menu.
Create an entry for an account as usual using the Add button.
When you specify an address ending in @hotmail.com, OE will recognize it as a Web-based account and give you a number of Web-specific options, including downloading your Hotmail folder structure.
If you don't have a Hotmail account, you can use Outlook Express to create one.
Go to the Create New Account... menu item under the Tools menu.
After creating a Hotmail account in OE you will be able to use it like any other POP mail account: for retrieving email from Hotmail and storing it on your local hard drive, using OE's sophisticated filtering capabilities, and so on.

Thanks a lot Mr Button. 
Which program is better to use for the average joe sending emails? I'm presuming it's Outlook but I don't know the difference between that and express.

Outlook Express is better (and it's free) for home use. Outlook is a chargeable product and it's primary design is as a client for MS Exchange rather than Internet e-mail (known as POP3).
If you download IE6 you get Outlook Express 6 as part of the download (if you select it from the options).

Word of advice to you all, dont EVER reply to a bit of SPAM email, even if you are "unsubscribing".
First of all, that type of Unsubscribe option is completely ignored. What they actually then do is ramp up the effectiveness of your email address because there is "a human being on the end of this one for sure !".
Your email address will then be given higher treatment ( by Spammers ) because they know there is somebody on the other end.

FYI. I haven't used Hotmail much, but I get fairly fast response from Yahoo mail (another free service like Hotmail). For me in D.C., things usually move through Yahoo mail in a couple of minutes. 15 minutes worst case. Go to www.yahoo.com and click on one of the mail links for more info.

Why do you want to use Yahoo or Hotmail - why not PPRuNe Mail?

I got one of the first PPRuNe e-mail addresses but have not used it once after I discovered that I couldn't use it through Outlook Express.
The introduction of PPRuNe e-mail (with its advertising) was one of the more blatant bits of evidence of the commercial aspects of this BBS.

PPD, I well understand the need for income to pay for "our habit" and I'm not knocking it, believe me. However, I wonder if others share my sense of sadness that this "thing" has got as big as it has (more that doubled in the last year). Inevitable, of course, with Web awareness spreading like the 'flu.
I was a mite gruntled when I found I could not use my prized PPRuNe e-mail address because the server addresses were not available for me to put into an Outlook Express account as is possible with a normal Web mail account.
No, I don't know how much a multi processor rack mounted server costs to buy, rent or maintain but I sure as hell couldn't afford it!

Although PPRuNe is now a big, busy site it is still run by a group of like-minded people using their Macs and PCs from their homes, or in Danny's case often from internet cafes in airports
I'm not sad PPRuNe is growing as we are now big and mature enough to be heard in the industry and so PPRuNe provides a voice for those involved in professional aviation.

If you have an normal email address, you can login from a remote computer using www.mail2web.com and pick up your usual mail is you know the server details. This way you dont have to deal with that wait forever rubbish you get with web based mail etc. Give it a try!
