Portable DVD players

I've always received good advice here about electronic equipment and I now need to buy a new portable DVD player. My previous model was a Hitachi with a 7in screen and I was happy with size of it although it felt a bit fragile and was liable to overheat, so I'm considering different brands now.
If anybody has any recommendations about brands and types, I'd like to hear them please!
Thanks

This one!

Hello Small Dog,

I just 'Which on line' and their best buy is the Philips PET720 at about £130.00

"The Philips PET720 Best Buy is one of the most portable players on test and has good picture quality for movies excellent sound quality with Best Buy headphones and is easy to use. It also has the best battery life of all the players we’ve tested.
One of the most portable players we’ve tested, this small white player is very compact and measures 20x19x5cm and weighs 1.2kg. It has a small 7 inch screen and the battery pack plugs on the back.
The player has good picture quality for movies, the picture is sharp and clear, although a bit grainy. You can see the screen clearly even in bright sunlight. Picture quality is okay for stills too but is a little jittery at the top of the picture. The screen can be adjusted through 180 degrees like most players.
It has two headphone jacks, but no headphones are supplied. We got excellent sound quality by using a pair of Best Buy headphones. Like other players on test, sound from the built in speakers is poor, it is tinny and you can hear noise from the drive at the same time. You adjust the volume using a scroll wheel.
Controls on this player are to the right of the disc drive, they are big buttons which make a good click when you make a selection. It is easy to use and a remote control is supplied. Unfortunately, there is no resume feature, so if you turn the player off mid movie, you lose your place on the disc.
This player has the best battery life of all the players on test at 5 hours 25 minutes. Charging takes 4 hours and 45 minutes, and power consumption is average when connected to the mains. A car adapter is supplied but no attachments are supplied for mounting it in the car.
It is compatible with CD-Audio, CD-R, DVD-Video, VCD, MP3, WMA, JPEG-CD and MPEG 5.1 formats.
Pros: One of the most portable players, Good picture quality for movies, Excellent sound quality possible with Best Buy headphones, Easy to use, Best battery life of all the players on test
Cons: Noisy disc drive, No headphones supplied"

Anymore than that and I am probably pushing the limits of copyright, however they do recommend Sennheiser HD435 or PX100 both at about £35.00 each

Hope this helps.....enjoy!

Cheers

hi small_dog.

About a year ago I needed a portable for work and after a bit of research came up with the Philips PET720 as meeting all my requirements.

Overall I am happy with it and it hasn't let me down, though the quoted battery times are possibly a bit optimistic - but they probably are for all machines. I reckon I get about three - four hours out of it. It can also work off the mains.

If you run it in battery mode then the battery, which is external and attaches underneath the unit, doesn't fit very securely and is always falling off when being carried by hand (not in a case) so you may need to get some velcro or something else to provide a securer fit.

One bad point is that it didn't come with a case as standard and so you will need to get a case from somewhere else, but be aware that the battery does stick out the back so check that your proposed case will take it with the by now properly secured battery attached.

One advantage of this model is that it does accept an external video input so if necessary you can hook up a camcorder or possibly a video ipod to it using the Philips supplied minijack leads but don't expect to get a very good picture.

I like the push buttons as they have a sure touch to them and have survived well when the unit is used for transcription stop start rewind start rewind start etc. and unlike some other units that I looked at it does appear to be quite hard wearing.

I don't like giving out wholehearted recommendations as it is so subjective but what I will say is that so far in about a year this unit (my first portable DVD) has suited my needs and hasn't gone wrong. (Outside in daylight can sometimes be a problem and lots of papers are needed to shield the screen from the sunshine!)

And the Philips can be made region free via the remote, if that's important to you. At that pricing point, check out Optronix too: it supports DTS audio, which I think the Philips doesn't, and DivX.

If its not too late i would Second "any" Philips players. They are a little more expensive but they are a great value package, some come with headphones, and even a case, just look and ask the retailers...

We used to sell Pro-Line and Goodmans ones that was also great buys, they was just a little on the bulky side, but they had in cases bags and even car adapters...

Worst Buy = PANASONIC... If you have a few £££ to spare, get one, if not, dont bother. They have great screens, usually very slick, but come with nothing in the box, expensive addons, and they are the most expensive too...

Philips makes Goodmans and Proline ones, well they did when i worked in retail a year or so back, they are just recased and in cases use cheaper stuff...
