External Hard Drive duplicates

I've just purchased an external hard drive to transfer all of my music to (45Gb worth). After the transfer, I now appear to have 90Gb worth of data on it. Itunes shows 45Gb, but now a new section appears under the shared title with AAC files & 90Gb. Why has the data been duplicated ? Why can't I delete the AAC files? I'm confused!

The files on your hard disk, may have been compressed, if you look at them though WIndows explorer, and they appear in blue, then they are compressed. By default when they are copied to another disk, they lose their compression attributes.

As an aside I would not recommend using compression, as it slows things down, as is really only to be used, as a quick fix, if you are really running out of disk space.

all the best,
