Windows Mobile 2003/Skype/Ipaq 3870

A multi-question for IPAQ 'freaks' please

1) Has anyone tried Skype on this machine?
2) Does it work reasonably well?
3) It requires WM2003: I have WM2002. If anyone knows of a source for the upgrade could they please respond by PM?

I gave away my 3870 to my elder daughter when I got the 5555, but I think I had Skype running on it.

I certainly do on the 5555. Daughter never used the 3870 and granddaughter "acquired" it and then "lost" it. Skype on the 5555 works passably well - the Laptop does better, but if there's a WiFi hotspot about I can Skype with either.

Mine has Windows CE 4.2 on it. The label on the back says "Pocket PC 2003 Prem w/ Outlook 2002". I have no idea if that's WM2002 or WM2003, but it does all I want it to do! Diary, phonebook, very occasional e-mail or web browsing, and some very large Excel spreadsheets (including the details of the 4,600 burials in our Churchyard).

I used to use it for SMS, via Bluetooth to the old cellphone, but the V3 made that superfluous and I don't use it any more.

If you want me to Skype you from my iPaq, PM me with a Skype name.

Thanks Keef - I'm in a chilly Newfoundland right now, treading snow, so cannot progress this. I've searched for WM2003 but find no supplies. Any ideas?

Supplementary, as they say in 'the house'... Would an 'upgrade wipe all my settings/progs, and if so will my 2002 back-up work on WM2003?

No idea about WM2003 and sources thereof, but ebay suggests
this.

I'm pretty sure that upgrading would remove all your stuff and settings. Google might tell. Copy/download first!

I had to "reinstall" the OS on the 3870 and "lost" everything in the process.

Chose that one cos it's in Canada, didn't I.

Did you know Canada is German for "Nobody there" (Keiner Da)?

Oh well.

Keef - sorry to be a touch late and thank you for both your geographical consideration and language tuition.

I followed your 'earthly' guidance via Google and found a download to upgrade (successfully). I now have WM2003 running fine. Only downer is that I cannot get my Senao CF wifi card to run in 2003.....................always something!

If anyone else is trying to run Skype on the 'slower' IPAQs you may be pleased to hear that the 2.2 beta version will run.

Feeling quite silly now! The stuff that will not run on PC2003 (WinCE4.2) grows evermore, and I feel I would like to 'return' to PC2002

Apparently I need the HP/Compaq upgrade CD which has a 'restore ROM' option to return the rom to PC2002. I do not think that Keef's Canadian link is the IPAQ OEM stuff, so if anyone has the relevant CD I would appreciate a PM.

Back to the top in case ANYONE has a 2.2 ROM image for the 3800 series. The only remaining one on the HP/Compaw site is in Korean.
