98SE boot up problem

The kids' PC runs 98SE. I told it to delete the temporary files using the utility in Windows.

The next thing I knew it re-booted and asked for the 20 character auth code. Luckily I had one to hand, but that only boots as far as a dialog box asking for a user logon and password (nne of the nippers had set up an account). In the past we could Esc that and it would finish booting. Now it stops, and say that explorer.exe has caused a problem.

I tried booting in safe mode, but the same problem. When I booted one line at a time it failed, but said that it was missing himem.sys. An examination via DOS shows that himem.sys is in the Windows directory, so perhaps it is corrupt.

All I have to help is a copy of a 98SE installion CD, plus a valid auth code. No boot up floppy, I'm afraid to say.

Does the panel have any ideas?

Cool

Hello,

A part of the panel...answer you....

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and D/L what you need....and put on a floppy.
It will be piece of cake to reinstall over your OS Windows 98...and normally you will not lose nothing...but maybe just few settings..but all your important stuff will be there....

Regards.

Thanks - after going round in circles a few times I seached another forum and typed scanreg /restore at the c: prompt. Selected the penultimate restore point, and we are now back in business.
