Thumbs down Wireless Internet help needed

Hi peeps
*bit of background*
I have brought a new build house, with one master socket and three extension sockets.

My wireless router was attached to an extension socket upstairs bar a few teething problems and all was fine for a while, then the internet ADSL light would go out for a while and flash on and off.

When the Internet did work it would be painfully slow registering 1 MBPS on my wireless signal on the tool bar.

I reset the router trying to get it to work and set the computer back to a time when i knew the internet worked but still no joy.

Once i plugged the router into the master socket it worked.......for about a minute
The helpdesk told me to take the front of the master socket off and use the test? line, and every thing was fine.

Today a bt guy turned up and is sure the line is fine, and thinks its the wiring from the master plug to the extension sockets. (hopefully the connection wiring)

My question is why would it all of a sudden stop working on extension socket, And can any one advise on the correct instalation of the wiring to the extension sockets.(colours etc)

The site sparky is still about but i would like to know how this all works.

The colours are not fixed but they do need to match at each end. Open the main box and check the colours aginst the numbers. Replicate this in the secondary boxes. New build is always a problem. I am reliably informed that carpenters can nail a single cable several times per metre.

If all is fine using the socket with the cover off then the next thing is to disconnect the extensions from this and try it with the cover on. If it doesn't work then it is the box. If it does then it is the downstream wiring. In any event it is something for the contractor to deal with.

I have disconnected the extensions and put the cover on and it works fine.
Looks like downstream wiring then

This link will give you an extensive lesson on extension wiring. You want to concentrate on the NTE5 master socket.

If the sparky hasn't used the correct tool to secure the wires to the IDC terminals then the wires could easily have broken or just worked loose. Should be an easy fix. Are all the extensions giving poor ADSL performance or just one - that could narrow down the problem?

if you've only 3 extension sockets, then it shouldn't be too much of a problem to find the bad connection. try and establsh how they are wired, i.e, start at the first extension after the master and check the connection, if it doesn't work at the first extension, the problem likely lies at the master socket, probably a loose or broken connection, quite common. As they are wired in a chain, any socket after the fault will cause a problem.
