Get yourself a codec pack such as Tsunami (unfortunate name).
Alternatively, get Gspot, which will show you the codecs being used.
When it comes to playing back, try VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
which comes with just about all you need.

VLC is also out there for Mac users - it's been my default player for a couple of years now. Quicktime, preview and DVD Player totally redundant. The VLC group are very quick on their feet regarding progress (?) in codecs.
