Slow Shutdown

Hello Folks - Recently my PC (Win XP) takes much longer to shutdown, sometimes as long as 5 minutes, while it goes through Logging off (the longest part) / Saving Settings / Shutting down. Any ideas?

Could be to do with closing down internet connections. I had the same problem and sorted it. Have a look back here about 1 month.

Can also be caused by registry errors - try checking/cleaning with one of the free utils. Also, if you haven't defragged for a while, it won't hurt.

Take a look at your 'Application' Event Log (via Administrative Tools). Probably a good chance you have 1517 or 1524 errors. If so, download: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en.

This is the latest version, out just a few days ago. Even if you don't have the specific errors it works very well at cleaning up and speeding up log-off/shut down.

When you create a user identity in WinXP, memory is allocated to all the personal settings that you have. Over time, this space increases and increases, mostly with junk, and slows login and shutdown considrably.

Just create a fresh user identity after defragging and cleaning your registry etc. and you should see an improvement.
