Resizing jpegs

A friend sent me an email with attachments totalling 8MB, which turned out to be 4 (count 'em!) jpegs. I've no idea how anybody makes a jpeg that big even using maximum resolution, but now that I have them, how do I reduce them in file and physical size, assuming I want to keep the whole photo?

What software have you got? You can compress them more to make the file size smaller but you do lose quality. Or you can reduce them in size, pixel-wise (eg reduce to your screen size of 1024x768 or whatever you're using). Or both. Whatever you do you will lose either quality or the ability to zoom in later. There some fairly simple picture re-sizers available free on the web.

I don't have any specialist graphics software. I was wondering if you could do it in Windows Paint or similar. I do have a couple of PC magazine cover discs which used to contain shareware copies of things like PhotoExpress or similar, but don't appear to have anything similar now. I'm sure I could get something from downloads.com though.

There are various freeware programs available on the internet that will help you to do this.

Try entering "freeware resize jpeg" into Google.

For example Photo Resize Magic looks as if it would do the job?

I think Picassa (Free) also does a very good general purpose job with photographs.

you are lucky! 4 into 8 mB? I have a few jpgs above 7mb each, but the quality is astounding.

Simple cheap & cheerful way (in XP at any rate) is:

Right click file(s)
Send to
Mail recipient

Choose degree of reduction if wished

Then copy reduced size files from (eg) Outlook into folder.

Try Irfanview. Piss easey to use and an excelent photo tool. Its free software with no banners, spyware etc.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

then download the Image Resizer listed in the column on the right. You can resize as many images as you want in one go to what ever size you want.

I use it to resize the photos to 1024x768 for my website. This produces a nice small file size, but still a good enough resolution to use as a desktop background or print out.
