NTL & Telewest @ 10mbps
BBC reports NTL is upgrading all its broadband customers to 10Mb/s.
Anyone here with them who could report if that is correct and it actually working ok at that speed? Having heard all sorts of horror stories about NTL I'm not sure how they're going to cope with this. And I'm also interested in seeing if my provider - Telewest - responds to that in any way.

As am I. I thought 4mbps was pretty spiffy but if Telewest can afford to respond with something similiar to 10mbps, then woohoo

What do you know, Telewest is increasing its speeds to 2mb, 4mb and 10mb - depending on which package you are on.
They're also increasing their upstream speeds (finally) to 384k from 128k.

Out of idle curiosity what do they actually do when they upgrade? Presumably they need to replace some kit with newer, faster stuff but is it the cables, the servers at their end or something else.
Alternatively (with my cynics hat on) do they simply remove whatever it is that restricts the speed so they can charge more for a higher speed.

Last time they upgraded us from 512k to 1Mb nothing was physically changed at the customer sites - it just happened over night - don't think I even had to reset the modem.
The equipment I have from them (Motorola SB4100) is certified to work at 38Mbps downstream and 10Mbps upstream so there's plently of life left in them!
And they're not charging more - like they PR says it's free. We're not talking BT here [and they don't restrict on bandwidth either].

Yes 10Mb is on NTLs soon to be offered. Depending on your cable modem, you may just get be able to have your service upgraded, or you may need a new modem.
Be aware that it may be marketed as up to 10Mbit/s. Ask before you buy. They have specific statistics on the speeds each modem can handle - even if they're not telling...

Just had a letter from Telewest confirming the upgrades + they are also offering a free security package for their customers: this includes an antivirus, spyware, pop-up blocker, ad remover, firewall, parental control and privacy manager.
If you're a telewest broandband complete or above customer you can download
here
I disabled the firewall as I have a hardware version but the spyware seems to be quite effective as it removes items dynamically as you work/surf - the AV also worked on test viruses and the ad remover works to an extent though pprune will be please to know their stay put!
