Hi Whiz,

It's CWS.. but lets see if we can get rid of it the easy way first..

Please go here and download, unzip and then open CoolWebShredder (the standalone version.. second link). Then click on the Updates button and follow the prompts. Next, run the program by clicking on the Fix-> button.

Then, once you’ve done that, please post a new log, and we'll see what's left.

Cheers

Liam

Liam, would it be asking you to betray government secrets if I asked what is the giveaway that it's CWS?

Looks like I spoke too soon, the about:blank has returned despite me downloading Norton Internet Security 2005. Im assuming that the infected files are still in the PC and that I need to remove some of the about:blank entries I can see in the previous HJT scan. Anyone got any ideas ?
Thanks in advance
Whiz

Whiz,

Norton wont stop about blank, Run HJT again and check the about blank entries then fix. Next go to you internet settings an reset your home page to what ever you like.

After you ran CWS, your hijacked home page was removed leaving nothing, hence about blank.

Also go to the CWINDOWS\TEMP\ directory and delete everything in there. If sp.dll wont delete, rename it to something like tmp.tmp. The next time you start your computer, you can go back in and delete it.

Good luck

Avtrician,
Did as you said but even with the C: \windows\temp file empty the system still manages to find the se.dll file. I have gone further and deleted everything with a .tmp file extension, the system still manages to find the se.dll file

Just received the following link from a tech support forum. Scroll about half way down to the 'Automatic removal method' to see a new adware product which claims to be able to remove the about blank problem automatically. You can download a trial version which will last for around 5-7 days before it times out and asks for the cash. I will be trying this later today and will report back.
Cheers
Whiz

Whiz,
Have a look in c:/Documents andSettings/whiz/local settings/temp , it may be hiding there.

You may have to go to folder settings to view hidden and system files.

My son had it hiding in there with his login, when I opened IE it went into my folders. If there, delete / rename it and restart your computer and it should be gone.

probably a good idea to check local settings/temp for other users as well.

This time it should be good, but it is a tenacious little bugger.
