Belkin Wireless Issues

Hi all

Just set up a network with a Belkin adsl router/modem and linked to my old wireless card which is 80211b.

However - it keeps on dropping the connection after a period of time - the only way of keeping this conncetion up so far I have found is to adjust the properties on the wizard page to time 32627 which is about the most I have found. Why can you not have unlimited time - i.e. have your network permanently on connected to the internet?

Also I have a 512kps broadband connection - how can I test that that is what I am getting from tiscali?

Using the 80211b card am I significantly losing a lot of my bandwith compared to plugging my laptop straight into the wall?

Also and apologies for all these questions - how do you set up WEP or any other security. Every time I try to set it up on the router it asks me for 128 bit encrypted using a passkey to generate the encryption. When I activate it though the laptop can then no longer connect to the router and so I have to reset everything. If the passkey is generated automatically then do I have to copy down all the key settings and then put them in the card adapter?

Any answers gratefully received.

A confused technofile

Try leaving the time box empty. I had this problem as well when it had "0" in it but leaving the box empty has stopped the line dropping.

Cheers for the test site - I tested mine and got a respectable 500 kpbs but it mentioned upstream and downstream. Can anyone explain these to me - surely if I am downloading do I not just use the one stream?

Also if using wireless then surely you do not get the full broadband benefit if I can only transfer on 11mpbs then do I get the full benefit of 512 kpbs broadband?

...11mpbs then do I get the full benefit of 512 kpbs...
The answer is in the question

MEGA is 1000 * KILO -- therefore your wireless speed is about 22 times faster than your broadband speed...

AH64:

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

In english that means using different data rates for data send out from your PC (Upstream) and data received by your PC (Downstream). The rationale behind this is that you receive more data than you send - therefore it is more efficient use of the total bandwidth.

The 512k quoted is the speed of the downstream leg.

To expand on rustle's answer:

512kbps = 0.512mbps

Hope this helps

Thanks for that - why then would you need a 80211g network then - purely to handle sending audio wirelessly?

Stupid question but what data is sent from your pc then - I assume it was just requests etc.. i.e. if not acting as a server then not a problem.

Any hints on the WEP thing?

AH64:

The internet has always been a two way link. Dial up modems, apart from the very earliest models, were symmetric, thus 56k in each direction. Going upstream from your PC are your requests and responses to queries from any connected PCs (I do not want to get too techy here, but this can include things you may not want such as cookie details and malware reporting home ). Hence the importance of functioning firewalls which limit what can and cannot connect to your PC.

Aside from speed, off the top of my head, 80211g has somewhat improved security protocols.

To make wep work both the router and the laptop must use the same key. My wifi pc is currently u/s, so I cannot give you a step by step guide at the moment. But after setting up the router you need to copy the key onto the laptop.

All the best

EG
