Problems with Norton Anti-Virus updates

I've used Norton Anti-Virus successfully for several years and subscribe to Virus Definition updates. However, although I'm prompted to check for Virus Definitions, the option no longer appears on the Live Update page. My subscription is paid up. I've tried the Symantec site but there seems to be no option allowing me to call someone for help.
Any ideas?

Try this. It gives all contact numbers depending on the area you are in.

Cool

You can manually download updates here to ensure you stay upto date. Although this doesn't solve your specific problem, but you will stay protected.

There is a URL: http://www.symantec.com/region/reg_eu/techsupp/ where you can try the Subscription Troubleshooter on the RH side. The area on the LH side, takes you to: http://www.symantec.com/region/reg_e...t_options.html where you might be able to find what you want.

If urgent, you could probably update here. LiveUpdate file download info is here. Symantec unfortunately are not over helpful with letting you know what to do when you have a problem.

For Symantec there is a UK helpline number: 0207 616 5600. It’ll be “press 2 to speak to…” to begin with, so make sure you have a comfy chair handy. It will help if you are in front of your running PC at the time, but obviously if you’re on dialup you won’t be able to connect online, as you’ll be using your phone line. It is best to have any account numbers and registration numbers, proof of subscription (if you have any) so that they can confirm your status. Your old number should be on the renewal e-mail for last year if you bought it online.

There are other options, so come back if this doesn't help.

Had exactly the same problem last night!
Spent over an hour going through the norton-symantecs sites.
I then decided to check my firewall, zone alarm!
Opened it up went to program control. norton anti-virus. Put ticks in the access & server boxes! Tried again & downloaded all the updates!. Not saying this is your problem, but if you have a firewall check the settings..

regards nooluv.......

If "the option no longer appears on the Live Update page" then I suspect it's a software corruption. If nothing above has helped by now, I'd go for a re-install. Let us know of any progress.

Dear All,

Thanks for info.
Nooluv, I checked my Zone Alarm - all boxes ticked but I remember doing this about 3 months ago. I've selected "ask" to see if this makes a difference. The problem is, Norton says I only have Symantec Redirector, IDS and Live Update installed. It used to say I had Anti-Virus definitions, too. I've not removed anything that I know of.
I've updated the definitions manually for the time being - I'll wait for the next prompt and see what happens.
Once again, thanks for all assistance.

Bus429,

You could try uninstalling ZA to see if you can update NAV then.

Take Care,

Richard

Beware!

Hi Bus,

Live update packing in was the first symptom I got of impending doom for my Laptop (IBM Thinkpad R40, Win XP Pro, NAV, Blackice - set to paranoid with no back traces, Firefox browser)

Manual downloading from spannersatcx's recommended site stalled. I noticed furious network activity - 20 Megs of outbound data traffic! Closed browser and traffic continued. Disconnected from internet and started investigation. NAV found nothing - but then it didn't have the latest definitions did it? Spybot - nothing. Hijack This logfile identical to the copy of a clean logfile that I keep handy. Decided to do a system restore to last month and that looked OK. Reconnected to the net and tried to manually download the latest NAV definitions file again. Same result - download stalled, furious outbound data transfer. I also noticed that Blackice and NAV were shut down. I hadn't done that - restarted them and they were shut down again within ten seconds. Disconnected from the net and shut down the PC - I had other things to do. Later, restarted the PC to discover that my account was locked out as was the administrator's account.

So, nothing for it but to reformat drive C: and reinstall everything. Richard from Naples once asked why bother partitioning the drive? The answer is it saves you having to reload all the data files and family photos when you have a crash. And yes, I do keep them backed up on CD but that's yet another squillion megabytes to transfer. Better to keep them handy on another partition. So, that's another day of my life wasted by some spotty faced, lardy fat, burger stuffing, Coke guzzling, Bill Gates hating, computer freak loser, but at least the old Laptop's running faster and I've cleaned out all the dross that builds up in there.

If your NAV doesn't auto download the latest definitions any more, I recommend that you watch out and get ready for a clean installing session.
