Beware!
Hi Bus,
Live update packing in was the first symptom I got of impending doom for my Laptop (IBM Thinkpad R40, Win XP Pro, NAV, Blackice - set to paranoid with no back traces, Firefox browser)
Manual downloading from spannersatcx's recommended site stalled. I noticed furious network activity - 20 Megs of outbound data traffic! Closed browser and traffic continued. Disconnected from internet and started investigation. NAV found nothing - but then it didn't have the latest definitions did it? Spybot - nothing. Hijack This logfile identical to the copy of a clean logfile that I keep handy. Decided to do a system restore to last month and that looked OK. Reconnected to the net and tried to manually download the latest NAV definitions file again. Same result - download stalled, furious outbound data transfer. I also noticed that Blackice and NAV were shut down. I hadn't done that - restarted them and they were shut down again within ten seconds. Disconnected from the net and shut down the PC - I had other things to do. Later, restarted the PC to discover that my account was locked out as was the administrator's account.
So, nothing for it but to reformat drive C: and reinstall everything. Richard from Naples once asked why bother partitioning the drive? The answer is it saves you having to reload all the data files and family photos when you have a crash. And yes, I do keep them backed up on CD but that's yet another squillion megabytes to transfer. Better to keep them handy on another partition. So, that's another day of my life wasted by some spotty faced, lardy fat, burger stuffing, Coke guzzling, Bill Gates hating, computer freak loser, but at least the old Laptop's running faster and I've cleaned out all the dross that builds up in there.
If your NAV doesn't auto download the latest definitions any more, I recommend that you watch out and get ready for a clean installing session.
