MSN Messenger/Explorer log-in problem....

MSN Messenger/Explorer log-in problem....
Hi all. My MSN has just gone chest-up. When I try to log into Messenger I get this error come up..
........and when I try and log on to Explorer I get this,
I can log on ok to Hotmail, easy, just goes straight in and I have even changed my password from there but it has just this afternoon started doing this. I have uninstalled them and re-installed them and the same thing happens.
Same goes for two other msn addresses, one newish one and one made up today to see if that would work but no joy.
Anyone know what could be happening, possible solution?

I'm aware that MSN had a shed load of problems on 9th and 10th October.
I realise that you're probably well and truly connected again by now, but I suspect MSN were to blame for your problems, not you.

Hi There. It is still the same this morning. I can log into Hotmail ok but not explorer or messenger.
It must be something here like a firewall or something like that but I can't figure out what. I hadn't changed anything, it just happened the other night.

Check your firewall isnt set to deny explorer.exe and msnmsngr.exe access to the net. ALso make sure you IE isnt set to work offline.
If you run XP, try windows messenger instead of MSN...if you usually run windows then try MSN messenger.
Also try setting up a dummy account for a test (or let a mate log in thru your terminal)

Well, I turned off the windows firewall and the zone alarm, still won't let me log on, same errors as above but I can log on to hotmail. 
I have no idea what it could be.

Latest is I have managed to track it down to a MSN problem. I have downloaded the BT/Yahoo Communicator that has Yahoo messenger on it and that works ok. It is just the MSN Messenger/Explorer that won't let me in.
Anyone know of any settings that I should have? I have tried lots of security settings from Low to High and no joy at all.
Any help would really be appreciated here with this...........

Try completely uninstalling MSN Messenger and then reinstalling?
To remove it completely you can go into START then RUN and then type :
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then re-download the app and try again

I'd definitely email MSN support with this one as it seems to be somewhat of a mystery.
It could be some sort of fault within Windows that requires tinkering with the registry or something like that, something that only they would have a definite answer for.
Also have a look at http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/to...?TOPIC_ID=3708 which seems to be a decent thread regarding problems like yours. You may find the answer on there. Sadly though it's 7 pages long
And, lastly, just out of interest which version of ZoneAlarm do you have installed? Not version 5 Pro is it by any chance?

Hi. It is V3.7.211.
I have just filled in a feedback form for Microsoft, they say they will be in touch within 24hrs.
I will go off and have a look at the link you posted, see if there is anything there.

I've just had a good read through that thread and there are loads of solutions seemingly for your exact problem therein.
Stuff like check you're not using a proxy server in Internet Explorer (Go into TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > CONNECTIONS > LAN SETTINGS > make sure there's no tick in the "Use a proxy server for your LAN..." box at the bottom and either of the automatic detection boxes at the top.
Anyway, let me know how you get on or not and I'll see what else I can rustle up

Try this mate - It may have something to do with Windows storing usernames/passwords:
Remove/Add Items from remembered list in Messenger login
When you sign in to Messenger, it remembers every email address / .net passport that you signed in under. To remove an item from the list of remembered names:
1. In Start menu select Run
2. enter: "control userpasswords2"
3. Go to Advanced tab
4. Select Manage Passwords Button
5. Add or Remove items at will

All it says on the official support pages is :
There could be several reasons why you are unable to sign into .NET Messenger Service.
Try the following:
If your Passport is not recognized, go to a Passport site (http://www.passport.com or http://www.hotmail.com) sign in, and make sure you are recognized there. If you are recognized there but still can't sign into .NET Messenger Service, the messaging servers could be temporarily down for maintenance or may have reached capacity due to heavy Internet traffic (during peak usage hours). Wait a short while, and then try again. You can check our server status page for the latest information on the service.
You may also want to:
Disable your 'auto-detect' settings on your browser. For Internet Explorer users, click the IE Tools menu, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button, and then clear the 'Automatically Detect Settings' box.
Check for a false proxy setting. On the MSN Messenger Tools menu, click Options. On the Connection tab, be sure the 'I use a proxy server' check box is clear. This option should only be selected if your network administrator tells you to do so.
HOME or PERSONAL LAN USERS

You have been brilliant mate, again, many thanks for trying to help me out here, I know it must be frustrating, even so, many, many thanks for your time trying to sort it out.
I have done all what it says in your post above, sent them an email yesterday, just waiting to hear from them.
Only thing I have not done is look all the way through that thread you posted the link to. Very busy at work at the moment, limited access to my PC, well not limited but only briefly logging on as I am doing long days at the moment, early starts, late finishes, a week of mondays if you know that expression...

Sorted. This from BigBlueBall Forums
If any of you are having trouble logging on to messenger and you get the error about a "bad sign in name and password reset your password blah blah blah" here's the solution: Exit Messenger, Click Start->Run-> and then type in: regsvr32 softpub.dll Click OK. That's it. Re-open messenger and log-in. This solution also applies to all those people that cannot access ANYTHING MSN (that is, you can't register for a new passport, access any websites etc). Hope it works for you too.
