Post Gmail, I have some invites available

Hello there,

You may or may not be aware that Google will soon launch it's free Gmail (Google Mail) service with 1000Mb of space and 10Mb attacments.

Anyway, there are some people who have some invites for these accounts whilst the service is still in BETA mode.

I am trying the service and it is pretty good.

I have 2 spare invites, which I offer here at no cost. I also challenge other gmail account holders to offer their invites here on PPrune FOR FREE....

Anyone interested in getting one of my invites, PM me.

Others with Gmail Invites, make it known here.

Best Regards

Invictus

If you are interested, post your email address here, remember to disguise your email address to avoid the bot's that automatically harvest emails from the net .. eg username .....at....hotmail ...dot...com

Snoopy, your invite is sent.

If it is not in your hotmail inbox, it sometimes gets caught as spam

--

Svenny , your invite is sent.

If it is not in your hotmail inbox, it sometimes gets caught as spam

--

If I get any more Gmail Invites, I\'ll post a notice here.

Those who do get gmail accounts will get the opportunity to invite friends (or family) after a few days.

If you do not have anyone to give it to, please consider offering it here.

Those interested, post your details here so that the invites can be sent to you.

Be aware that yahoo and hotmail (the opposition) sometimes throw gmail invites into the trash.

Regards
Invictus

BEWARE!!!

This wonderfully large email storage is at the expense of you agreeing to receive targeted advertising.

This is done by a program which screens your email for keywords then sends you relevant advertising 'spam'.

This is not true....

This is true...... just like all the other free email out there.

I have been using Gmail for almost a month now. The advertising is LESS intrusive than Microsoft Hotmail or Yahoo.

YES, they do have targeted advertising, but it is discretely located on the side of the screen and is "relevant" to the context of the email. I do NOT find it to be "in the way" or an invasion of privacy.

But hey that's just me. Here is what Google says about it.

Quoted from Gmail.com

There are no pop-ups or untargeted banner ads in Gmail. Gmail users only see relevant text ads, similar to those on Google search results pages . The matching of ads to content is a completely automated process performed by computers. No humans read your email to target the ads, and no email content or other personally identifiable information is ever provided to advertisers.

Ads are matched using the same technology that powers the Google AdSense program, which already places targeted ads on thousands of sites across the web by quickly analyzing the content of pages and determining which ads are most relevant to them.

..so unless the email is 'scanned' how are relevant adverts chosen?

Large piece on BBC Breakfast yesterday AM which is where I saw it and Google/GMail representative admitted that email IS scanned albeit by a machine to decide what advertising to send.

Don't rush to sign up until you've thought it through.

There are many security issues involved here and it's been the talk on security sites for months now.

Here is The Register's take on events

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/04..._evil_privacy/

but you will find similar articles all around.

As for reading all emails well AoL does just that ; electronically of course and then there's Echelon.nuff said

....isn't that denying the quote of my post?

From your post..

The matching of ads to content is a completely automated process performed by computers.
..which is what I originally said!

Ads are matched using the same technology that powers the Google AdSense program, which already places targeted ads on thousands of sites across the web by quickly analyzing the content of [b]pages[.b] and determining which ads are most relevant to them
In the interview 'pages', in bold was replaced with emails - else almost word for word.

Maybe this would be better in the Computer Forum for comments from others who use or advise against its you?

I saw the article on BBC yesterday too. The computers "screen" your email - but not all ads will be correct.

The example they gave was a simple phrase such as "Polish community" could mean you get spammed form ads selling car polish!!

Excellent ATC thread this.....
