"Device connected to channel 2"

I wonder if the resident experts might be able to shed some light on this for me.

I was surfing the Internet at home last night - dialup via AOL, Win XP Pro, IE 6 - and I thought I detected a slow down in transfer rates for about 10 or 15 seconds.

A couple of minutes later, a small message window (not Messenger Service, more like an error message/alert dialog box) popped up, saying "Device connected to channel 2", with only a click box marked OK. When I pressed that, it just disappeared.

Ever suspicious, I killed the AOL software and got the modem jack out of the wall straight away, then ran Spybot, AdAware and Norton Antivirus, with all negative results.

Questions: Is there anything left to worry about? If so, what should I do about it?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Globaliser,

It does sound fishy.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...o+channel+2%22

Only two hits for that message you got, both from the same page on different sites.

Have you got anything running in task manager that you don't recognise? Here's a couple of tools that search a bit deeper in your machine. Try these and see if they find anything. Download and update them, then just run as you would any AV.

Swatit

TDS3

They're both free and very good at what they do. The last time I used Swatit, it did take a while to run, but just leave it going in the background. Still no guarantee there is anything to find, but it won't hurt to check more thoroughly.

Cheers

Liam

Globaliser,

I would also follow the guide in the thread:

Guide for Eliminating Spyware, Adware, and Random Popups

To make sure you do not have any extra pests in your computer.

Take Care,

Do you have a cordless mouse or keyboard - 'cause that message appears on my logitech every once in a while. prolly when the radio contact is broken/repaired.

Bingo! Yes, I'm using a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo. That must be it.

But I've got Liam's and Richard's suggestions downloaded and printed already too, so I will go home and have a go at those just in case.

Many, many thanks!
