XP shutting down prob?

Well had one problem sorted by the good offices of this forum today ,may as well try another when I am on a roll.
My nephews computer(he is running xp and is connected to broadband), shuts itself down after about five minutes with this message

INITIATED BY NT AUTHORITY SYSTEM.

REMOTE PROCEDURE CALL RPC
SERVICE TERMINATED UNEXPECTEDLY.

Its been doing this for about a month now and as far as I can see he has done nothing about it, I am not familiar with xp at all, I ran msconfig to see what was on start up but that refuses to stay on the screen, anybody got any ideas as to what is causing this shutdown.
This particular machine though it has a fast spec seems to take ages to boot up and to shut down for that matter,I have told my nephew to delete xp and instal win 98 ,as I could then be of some help but he tells me it is a far superior operating system, I do not know if he is being ironic or what.

Suggest you do a Blaster worm search in Google and use one of the cleaners that are on line.

Also use Windows update and ensure patches etc to keep out blaster worm are downloaded.

Take care to follow instructions carefuly otherwise a high risk of re infection

Look at

Hi,

I have a specially prepared C&P.,. (surprisingly) I don't get to use it as often as I'd like, and it does have a good tool in it.

I'd suggest having a ook at the sticky again, on his behalf, as any AV updated in the last 6 months should have fixed it.

The first thing we need you to do is to download the Fixblast tool. Next, switch off system restore, close all programs and run fixblast.

Reboot and set a new restore point. See here for XP, or here if you’re using ME.

Once done, you need to go here and download the security patch.
Although, if his machine is that far removed from a windows patch then I highly recommend that he go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

Cheers

Liam

tony draper,

It is not your day. If you are on broadband, I highly recommend adding a Router, so you have a hardware firewall. It will keep hackers and Blaster types out of your computer.

Take Care,

Richard

I was infected by the Blaster worm when I had to repair my XP installation (reverts to pre-SP1). I had literally been connected for a few seconds trying to download the patches when the fecker got me. A handy tip to stop the PC from shutting down and giving you time to download the patches etc:

Go to Start | Run and enter cmd
When the command prompt window opens, enter shutdown -a . This will stop the PC from shutting down - you have to be pretty quick though!
