disapearing hard disc space

disapearing hard disc space
so can anyone help with this one?
i have a 20 gb hard drive partionend for windows 4 gb, another 4GB drive and 12 gb drive,and another 60 gb for other things flight sims etc.
the empty space on my 4gb drie with windows has slowly shrunk to 235 mb and now runs aol etc very slow.
if i do a properties check off all folders on the drive including the hidden ones it is only 2.34 MB where is the missing space of 1.5 gb? anyone any ideas?

and for richard from naples - my last mother board (see other post) had a problem with the memory controller on board so im told

A quickie or two: is it XP and if so do you have disk quotas enabled? <-- not sure if this may cause your problem, it's really a wildshot based on the info you gave.
Did you use a partitioning software.?

A bad memory controller sure explains your problems with the previous mobo.
As for this hard drive. Make sure you are not hiding system and hidden files. Then check the size of your pagefile. It will be in the root directory under the name - pagefile.sys
If you did not set the pagefile to be a static size, it will resize itself and can take up most of the unused space on the hard drive. I use a pagefile min and max size of 384Mb. That way it does not waste CPU Cycles resizing itself and it does not fragment itself either.

If you are running Windows Xp have you got system restore switched on? This can potentially use a lot of disk space. Right click My Computer - Properties - System Restore and change the settings, if you are happy with the way your machine is running switch it off then back on this will remove all old restore points. This should help you free a little disk space.
Another way to reclaim some disk space is to delete all your old windows update uninstalls which are found in the windows directory in folders called $Nt... this is more a desperate measure but if your system is running OK then you can probably live without them but I have reclaimed a lot of disk space doing this in the past.

You could try a program like diskSpace Explorer which shows the contents as a pie chart and allows each segment to be further examined.

By the way, have you deleted your temporary internet files recently (found in ie- tools - internet options)? I have used the options to move my temp internet files from the windows folder to a seperate small partition to slow down windows fragmentation.

Your space may be shrinking for a different reason.
go to :

Replace the "*" with the letter u and you will see how your disk space can decrease.
I use Window Washer, there may be other better programs around that do the same thing.
