help!!no icons

Something strange has happened to my browser, no icons of adverts are showing up just squares with red x 's in em, for instance the rest of this page is covered with little box's with red x's .
The only thing I have done recently is to download and run adaware, this is a new instal of win98 on a newly formated H/D.
II have tried running the repair IE from the system info tools, I have run scanreg/fix, hasn't made any difference.
Is it worth reloading windows, or should I perhaps download IE 6.
I am running the version of IE which comes on the win98 cd, I think it is IE 5.2.
Any ideas? everything else seems to be working fine.
Thanks in advance

Can you see any graohics?

If not click on tools, internet options then advanced. Scroll down to multimedia and make sure no tick is in "show image download placeholders" and their is a tick in "show pictures"

Hope this helps

Tried that ck 4707 hasn't made any difference, the show placeholders was ticked so was the show pictures, thanks anyway.
Its def a problem with IE, every thing else is ok.
Think I will download a later version of IE see if that cures it.
Don't think theres much point in reloading windows, I always tend to end up with the same problem when I do that, as it saves the reg setting and stuff.

Bet you've done this, Drapes, but I'll mention it anyway.

Disable your adaware stuff AND any firewall and see if things improve.

If you're using ZoneAlarm, reset to defaults in Privacy, Main, Mobile Code Control, Custom, Mobile Code Control. That'll disable your JavaScritp Blocking.

And I'd certainly recommend IE6 SP1 eventually but this is unlikely to be a problem with your IE. (IE6 is smaller, faster and more robust.)

Thanks peeps, downloaded IE6 (took a hour and ten mins) installed that and everything seems fine now.
I always seem to have trouble when I install third partry stuff,I only downloaded adaware because I was sick of bastards like Yahoo installibng home pages on my machine without permission.
Guess I will have to tolerate it because adaware is going the journey.

tony draper,

Why are you getting home pages installed? You have to be doing something to get them added to your home page. That is not normal.

Take Care,

Its something that has been happening recently after I have been surfing the web, I shut down the machine, next time I boot up and log on I find I have the yahoo homepage or a new Search engine instead of my ISP homepage with my webmail acess ect on it.
Thiis in itself is not a great problem I can get my own homepage back in a minute, I just find it very irritating, that peopel can download and run stuff on my machine without my permission.
the main problem to me seems to be that there is no simple way of deleting the URL's for these pirates. from the homepage box in internet settings.

Drapes, if you were running behind a firewall with Spybot set to "immunise" things might improve.

Two days a go I rebuilt a Win 2000 PC running behind a firewalled router. This morning, Spybot found 3 advert cookies and 2 registry changes.

But its better than the alternative.

Yeh I have just downloaded Spybot, and it found and deleted all sorts of stuff, its a feckin liberty that people like Yahoo allowed to do this.
I think it was deleting stuff from the registry with adaware was what porked my machine originaly though .
Strange thing about Spybot, after it had done its thing the internet pages like Pprune were very strange, it had altered my graphic setting to 256 colours for some reason, ok for me I can find and sort probs like that ,but like I said in a previous post your home page disapearing and settings being altered must be a nightmare for people new to computing.

Good

Because my Spybot was a new re-install, I updated it from the 5000 odd entries it started with to over 9500 entries. That alone took about 10 mins and the scan then took 865 seconds.

Got time to have a shower or wash the car while all that is going on.

Tony

I would suggest running a bit of software called SpyWareBlaster as it looks for the known browser hijackers etc.

I have been running it for a week or two and have been getting less:

'Do you want to set your homepage to w w w . B a $ t a r d s .c o m'

It has also been getting good reviews around the web too.
