Canadian CPL to Mexican CPL

Hi everyone!

Before anyone says that I must be born in Mexico in order to fly commercial in Mexico, I have read it somewhere else too. The only thing I want to have clarified is that even through obtaining Mexican Citizenship, is this still an impossible dream?

This is not about building more hours, find an ''easy way'' to reach 1500+ hrs and then come back to Canada. This is about moving to Mexico permanently. My wife is Mexican-Spanish. I was born in Canada. I am not close at all to my family here in my home country. My wife is with me and support me in all my aviation dream, but the reality is our family, even our life, is in Mexico. We already have so much in Mexico, and we have nothing in Canada, on top of being alone all the time. I don't mind spending 2-3 years to get my citizenship through marriage, even if it means barely flying at all and having a 3 year set back forced on my career. Another option that we have is to move to Spain, where her father would be willing to follow us but we will still be far away from the rest of the family. Spain conversion doesn't seem so impossible, at least after reaching ATPL. So I am not looking into more info on that. My focus really is on Mexico.

My ability to speak Spanish is better than my native language. And obtaining my Mexicains citizenship and passport doesn't seem to be an issue, given it a couple years. I can understand not allowing foreign pilots to work temporarily in Mexico. But I can't understand not letting someone in my situation convert his licences. To me it comes to one decision: Either stay in Canada but pursue my aviation career, have my wife and children only having each other or move to Mexico, never be able to fly again, but have my wife and children be surrounded by a big amazing & loving family. I hope these 2 questions can help you see things from my perspective.

The best would be to find someone that knows Mexican laws in & out. Any insight on the situation is welcome. Thank you for reading me. Hopefully we can finally have a clear answer and not something vague. That way we can stop day dreaming and accept this reality. For clarification: I currently hold a CPL Multi IFR & passed IATRA. That's why I say CPL conversion. But I am seeking info on ATPL conversion as well, if it makes any difference.

Mexican pilot here. In order to fly commercially, the law says you need to be “Mexicano por nacimiento”, that means either you were born in Mexico, or you were born to Mexican parents. If you don’t fall in any of those two categories, there’s no way for you to fly here, no way around it.

That gives you a glimpse of how closed and backwards laws are here. Aviation in Mexico is a nightmare, the mere act of keeping your license, medical and logbook current so you can keep your job is so costly in terms of time, effort and money, it’s not worth it. It’s bureaucratic hell and the rampant corruption and incompetency makes life hard for pilots and air personnel in general, so you’re better off looking somewhere else.
