WestJet Seeks Slots to Fly 737 Jets From Toronto’s Billy Bishop
Good Morning All:
This morning when I read this report from Bloomberg I thought I had way too much egg nog last night!
I would ask you all not to consider this to be a rant but it is close. At YYZ they have almost completed a close to 5 Billion dollar upgrade to this airport which incidentally makes it one of the most expensive airports to fly in and out. It has all the bells and whistles such as Cat 3 approaches, full CFR capability, good infrastructure, and a workable ATC system (some political constraints for noise and working with Manops).
So now WestJet wants to get slots at YTZ for their B-737 Max (which I have no problem with) so what will they require for runway at maximum WAT so they can operate out of YTZ? From memory 08 26 is 3995 feet with little to no over run capability. How much is this going to cost for the infrastructure upgrade remember runway length needed is?????? Over run capability??? Approach aids and lighting???? CFR upgrade??? Infrastructure upgrade (deice facilites)???? Noise abatement is another issue (personally I love airplane noise)???? Where will general aviation go to now that Buttonville will be closed??? Bird control and from memory a fair number of Canada geese on the island??? But more importantly who will pay for this???????????? So will the net savings for time be what an hour 2 hours???????
Too bad YTZ was not a farmer's field with no obstructions but I digress

WestJet Airlines Ltd. (WJA) will seek to operate Boeing Co. (BA) 737 Max aircraft from Toronto’s Billy Bishop airport if it gets takeoff and landing slots at the island airfield, Chief Executive Officer Gregg Saretsky said.
“We would like to have access to the island airport but there are no slots available,” Saretsky said in a telephone interview from Calgary yesterday. “We would like to have the opportunity to fly jets ourselves from that airport. The 737 is capable of operating off the runway at Billy Bishop.”
Passenger jets are prohibited at Billy Bishop -- a ban that Porter Airlines Inc. wants to overturn. Toronto City Council’s executive committee voted two weeks ago to defer until 2014 a decision on whether to allow jets and lengthen the runway.
WestJet agreed in September to buy 65 737 Max aircraft with a list value of $6.3 billion, with deliveries due to start in 2017. Canada’s second-largest carrier doesn’t own any of the 202 slots at Billy Bishop. Porter, with 172, and Air Canada (AC/A), with 30, are the only airlines that operate there.
The airport sits on a Lake Ontario island about 100 meters (328 feet) from Toronto’s downtown waterfront. It draws business fliers and skiers heading to Quebec’s Mont Tremblant or Burlington, Vermont.
Asked whether the Max would comply with noise restrictions at Billy Bishop, Saretsky said: “I would say a qualified yes. The Max is not yet flying, so we have asked Boeing for information on what the noise output is. We would have to look at whatever requirement was imposed on the airport.”
Porter wants to operate jets at Billy Bishop as part of a plan to double its flight network and reach as far as Los Angeles and the Caribbean. It’s agreed to buy as many as 30 CSeries jets from Bombardier Inc. (BBD/B), an order that is conditional on the runway extension and a removal of the jet ban.
WestJet operates about 95 daily flights at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. The airfield, Canada’s busiest, is located about 30 kilometers from the city’s downtown.

I've got no problem with WestJet flying from CYTZ but 737s
really?
as a mere PPL wannabe I'm not massively familiar with the runway length required for a 737 but surely it'll be more than the proposed 200 metres?
As you say methinks someone has been hitting the booze

Presumably if Porter has its way and gets it jets then Porter is well-positioned to take some business from Westjet, no?
Some folks who may be sympathetic to Porter and may find the C-series to be inoffensive are likely to object more strenuously to WJ's 737s, no?
Surely this is just be a bit of theater on the part of WJ, hoping to stir up additional opposition to Porter's plans, no?

April Fools Joke ??
That story reads like an early april fools joke !!
A 737 Max on a barely 4000 ft. long runway, no substantial overruns, no RESA´s just nothing ??
Or is that story probably the answer to a strange looking 737 at Renton,WA in November 2012 that I saw there. That strange plane showed some extra pods under the wings near the engine nacelles (JATO??) and also I thought to see an arrester hook nicely folded under the rear fuselage !!
