CC-177 Canadian Airforce

CF's new C-17ER's designated CC-177 Globamaster III. Is there going to be a unique name for them? Does anybody know? Like Polaris? Or Aurora? It's Looking good though.

Happy to have these. Finally a sensible military decision in this country.

I thought the military didn't want the C17s...and was pushing the senile O'Connor to change the decision to new Hercs ??

Not true. In fact, a case has been made for a long time for a more diversified transport fleet. The Herc is a tactical airlifter, and to use it (as the CAF has) for intra-theatre lift very quickly burns a whole lot of life out of the airframe. What is needed (and is ultimately being delivered) is an appropriate mix of heavy lift with outsize capability (the C17), passenger transport (the A310/CC150 as well as C17 when available), tactical transport (existing C130s or C130Js) and some sort of lighter utility aircraft for Search and Rescue and Northern Ops.

This mix will allow the Air force to do what is asked of it in the most efficient manner possible.

It`s about time Canada had the ability for such airlift. Years of neglect have left them with an airforce in shambles. Good investment and good for Canada.

If the UK experience is anything to go by (leased four, bought them and have now ordered their sixth) they seem to be very useful!

The first C-17 will be making an appearance at the Abbottsford airshow. I do not think it is staying there but making a brief visit.
