Red face First Air

Alas,

First Air's Otters, like the DC-3's are now a part of history. The 748's- long a cash machine for the company, are fading away, to be slowly replaced by ATR's.

Contracts do not appear to be in the offing for the 727's.

The 37's are holding their own for now on skeds, and the Herc having no comparable competition soldiers on.

Resumes from laid off SO's and FO's abound. Even the mighty Otter captains, some with 20000 on type are adrift. The DFO, Chuck M, who had been with the company since his ramp rat days in 1980, has departed the fix.

Show'em you're an optimist... send them a resume. But do not expect an immediate reply. Like the Titanic in the hours after the iceberg, First Air is still afloat. It just seems like nobody's at the helm, and no-one is talking to the engine room.

justcurious,

I have a load of old pals at First Air from my MRC days. Alas I have lost touch with them. Any idea how I might get in touch with S. Tumoth? Last I heard he was in Yellowknife with First Air. If you can get in touch with him can you get him to e-mail me at [email protected]? Much appreciated.

Cheers

Hey there Nig,,"Mr. Tumoth" here. check your e-mails and then drop me a line. And for the person asking about first air, the way to get in now is to go second officer on the 727 and then on to the atr (means yellowknife or Iqualuit). Our last two ATR f0's started that way.

Good luck

still a nice guy eh nig?

Hey Jet,

First Air only hires Second Officers on the 727, they are slowly phasing out the FE's. But to answer your question not you dont have to foot the bill for the course and sim. They hold their ground school in Ottawa (3 weeks) and do their sim at American Airlines in Dallas (7 days).

Cheers,

Hey Jet

Be weary of advice from bilingual canadia(e)ns who don't don't make martinis as well as unilingual rednecks. The minimums are 300 hours with a commercial multi licence and a group 1 ifr.

you can apply at www.firstair.ca

good luck

Hi,

Does having the ATR rating help? Also what is the pay scale like?

Thanks!

I was told by a 'laid off' pilot, that he has been put in the queue for an ATR F/O seat. Unfortunately the movement at FirstAir isnt as quick as it used to be. :-(

I'm about 75hrs short of the minimus, but I am planning to have my CV there by new year!!

Good Luck

Chris

Thanks. I'll also be applying soon but a friend of mine with 600 hours on the ATR has had no reply... Oh well!

Having an ATR rating is definitely going to help but unfortunately you'd have to begin as a S/O on the 727. The normal progression has been S/O 727 then F/O on either the ATR or the HS748 (if you have enough hours maybe even the Dash-7 or the Herc).

As of right now there are still some pilots to be called back to either S/O or F/O positions. This is slow in the process but there has been talk of some initial ground schools in the new year (whether it happens is another thing).

Good Luck to All.
