what do F/As do off duty?

For the flight attendants book I'm doing, I'm looking for stories of interesting things that F/As--and particularly stewardesses from "the old days"--did when they weren't working. Things like interesting volunteerism, writing a book, working as an actress or model, playing a semi-pro sport, running an interesting business on the side, etc...

As an example (that I'm of course using) former Pan Am stewardess Betty Haas Pfister, who recently died at 90, owned a war surplus Bell P-39 Airacobra, a front-line fighter during the early days of WWII, and she actively air-raced it. Meaning that she was probably a hotter pilot than some of the captains with whom she flew.

A number of stewardesses did volunteer work at Southeast Asia orphanages and refugee camps as a result of their having crewed aboard aircraft carrying troops to and from Vietnam, as another example.

Any other good stories out there?

do you sleep at night ?
Yes.

What's your point? That people with jobs only work and sleep?

I'm sure there are a few cabin crew who are keeping the memory of Haas Pfister very much alive.

Each to their own I suppose.

Betty was very much a trail blazer, creating many new openings for aspiring cabin crew.. Although very interesting to note she only became a Haas Pfister in the 1950's when she was in her early twenties.. How liberating..

There are a number of crew at bmi who are active in helping a school in Sierra Leone. I could put you in contact with one of them if it is of interest.
If I am correct they are responsible for pretty much the entire construction of it (all be it financially not physically building it).

These are a couple of charities with cabin crew at the heart of them.
Other ex-crew include actor Michael French, presenter Trisha Goddard and of course, the Duchess of Cambridge's mum Carole Middleton.
