I've seen the chinese whispers thing a lot actually amoung passengers. There's always a know it all who'll insist they know better than the crew what the "real" issue is and they usually take every opportunity to update everyone else. Unfortunately they are also usually wrong but their vocal insistence gives them a kind of credibility.

'Paperwork' tothe average Joe could also be the aircraft technical log/maintenance release.... can't go without it. Of course most punters wouldn't know what that is so a rep would reasonably call it 'paperwork'.

I was also under the impression that a paper copy of pax manifest was required to be carried on all international flights. (Pretty sure this isthe case into and out of Australia)
